First pregnancy ultrasound question...

On January 19th I took 2 home pregnancy tests - both positive. I made an appointment and went to the dr. for a dating ultrasound on January 25th and the dr. could only see a small black dot which she called the gestational sac via the ultrasound. At that point I was confused, I left and bough 2 more pregnancy tests, took one that night and the next the following morning - both positive. So, 4 positive pregnancy tests, no period since the beginning of December and a gestational sac on the ultrasound - this may sound like a dumb question but does that gestational sac definitely mean I'm pregnant? I feel like until I see a little baby on the ultrasound screen I'm not going to believe it!!

This is my first pregnancy and although it wasnt planned, we are really excited!

At 6 1/2 weeks you would see a SMALL blob with a heartbeat inside. So, if you are only five weeks or right at six weeks that is all you would see. At 8 1/2 weeks I saw a little gummy bear with a heartbeat and measuring at 1 inch.

Do you have normal periods how many days are they? When were you due to start your period?

Is your doctor doing blood work today and repeat on Friday to see if your HCG is doubling? The blood work would indicate if the pregnancy hormone is progressing normally.

Traci - thanks for your response - yes, I went for bloodwork yesterday and repeat tomorrow morning... that will definitely put me at ease. I'm probably the most impatient person and this is really testing me! I'm regular for the most part and I was due to start my period on or around the 2nd week of January. I did look up images of 3-4 week ultrasound pictures and it showed what I saw but I guess I'm just skeptical because there wasnt a baby there yet!

I guess I'll just have to wait until tomorrow afternoon for the bloodwork results.

If you're saying you think you're five weeks pregnant than just a gestational sack is perfectly normal.  My 5 week ulstrasound showed just a black dot and when I went again at 6 weeks 1 day, there was a little flickering heartbeat. I was seeing an RE so I had a lot of ultrasounds.  It doesn't start to take on a shape at all until about 8 weeks and even then it's just a bean.

Thanks for your response. I'm glad to know that what I'm seeing is normal, I guess when you dont know what to expect its really scary.

I went in at 5 weeks 5 days and they couldn't see anything either and it freaked me out, especially since I was spotting, but everything is fine now. The following week they could see a little heartbeat. They also did the blood test thing that it sounds like you're doing also. So it sounds right on track to me.

Whoo-hoo! I am so happy for you! I know that I have been out of the loop for quite a while, everytime I think I am starting again, there is another setback. I was almost afraid to log in today...almost like opening the door to the principal's office...oh enough about me...Whoo-hoo! Your having a baby!!!!! Let us know what the Dr says and how things are going! I will keep you in my prayer ( they are short, but I will make sure I do put you in there too!) I'd say things are definitely ok too, although I'm thinking that you might have ovulated a little later then what would be normal which would explain why you only saw the gestational sac.  My RE does viability US at the 7 or 8 week mark.  I had one last Tuesday at the 7 week mark which was ok and I'm scheduled for another next Tuesday at the 9 week mark.
