heart rate and gender

So I had to go into the doctor today because I started spotting yet again. I saw one of my doctors partners instead of my normal ob and they did another sonogram. As soon as she pulled up the picture she said 'whoa thats a BIG baby!' and that lead to my ?'s of, am I further along then we thought? She said that even if I am a few weeks further along they still have to go by the original due date, but If I go into labor at say 35 weeks, they wouldnt stop it because that may be right on track. Anyways once she determined that the baby is fine, I told her I think its a boy, and she agreed! She said that going by the heartbeat of 150 bpm, she guesses boy. She said shes been wrong but she guesses my intuition is right. She tried to look but his (or her!) little legs were crossed, and she said it may be a few weeks to soon to have been able to tell anyways. She wants to me to rest for the rest of the week, no sex etc, just to be on the safe side, but she thinks im ok. So thats a blessing!!

So my ? is, have any of your doctors told you a sex based on heartrate, and how accurate was it? I went online, and everything I found ssaid above 140 was a girl! Thoughts? Experiences?

Have a great Tuesday ladies!

I work with a guy who has like 5 sons & 1 daughter and his wife is a NICU nurse. According to them, I am going to have a girl since the HB was 150. They said all of their sons were below 145 and their daughter was higher. I don't know how much truth lies in all this...hopefully my little one won't be too shy when we go to find out.

BTW, I know other people that totally rely on the Chinese Lunar calendar which also says I am having a girl. But my mom is convinced I am having a boy...who knows?

I have 4 children. 3 boys and 1 girl. My 1st boy had heart rates in the 120's & 130's consistently. My little girl had heart rates in the 140's consistently. My 3rd baby was a boy and his heart rate was 140's & 150's consistently. My 4th baby was a boy and his heart rate was high 120's-140's consistently but I had a fetal heart monitor with him so I could check his heart rate more often that I could with the others so obviously I got more random readings. My OB last time and this time say there is no correlation what so ever between heart rate and gender. If there is, say in one family, a correlation, it is just a coincidence and not hard scientific fact. I was going to guess based on the way you are carrying that you are having a boy because with every boy I had I carried poked out and cute like (even for as big I was, I guess I wouldn't have called myself cute but the belly was kind of cute poked out all basketball like) but with my girl I carried all wide and pillow like and didn't even show until almost 36 weeks and that was depressing. Some women will swear that if you carry out front and very round (like a basketball) that it's a boy and if you look like you got a pillow in there or carrying more horizontally (don't want to say wide so as not to be confused with big or 'fat'.......lol) then you're carrying a girl. It was true for me, but may not have been true for others. But I wouldn't put any stock in the heart rate thing. I would wait until that 20 week u/s to see the parts. That's the funnest part anyway!

I asked my OB the last time I was there because this baby's heartrate started in the 160's and was in teh 140's the last few times. She said that the heartrate determining gender is an old wives tale. It might be right some of the time - but then again what theory isn't! lol

Glad to hear that the baby is doing OK. REST REST REST!

The "big u/s" if I am not mistaken is typically scheduled between 18-20 weeks.  I have read people being fortunate enough to get it as early as 16 though too.  With my first I was 20 weeks and this time I will be 19 weeks.

I had a steady heart rate at 150-155 for all appt and I am having a lil lady.  I found out at 19 weeks; with no issues of detemining the sex at that point...once she revealed herself of course...Good luck...comparing those wives tales are always fun...Good Luck-Stacey

PS...I would have bet money on a boy the day I went in...so I wish my face would have been captured when they said....see those three lil lines...that's girly parts!

I love this old wives tale- This pregnancy I found out I was having twins and the heart beats were in the 160's. My sister, who can be a bit vindictive and is a nurse so she thinks she knows everything, even though she specializes in geriatrics, heard me talking about how much we wanted at least one boy. She said, "With a heart beat that high, they are bound to both be girls." She said it because she didn't want us to get what we wanted- long story but she is really nasty that way sometimes- and is now pregnant too after having finished her family years ago- but anyway, it turns out they are both boys! So your higher beat could still be a boy, but of course, it isn't a science or anything. Thanks for sharing though! Your intuition may be right- with my first pregnancy I was wrong, so this time around I tried not to listen to my intuition, which really kept telling me in lots of ways that both babies were boys- and so I wasn't very surprised to find out that they were!

My sons heart rate was usually in the high 140s to low 150s....every once in a while it would edge up to about 156....but he is ALL boy. LOL
