My grandmas have home health aids that are provided by Medicare. They only show up for half a day because both of my grandmas are pretty healthy for the most part so they don't need full time care but I think full time care is also an option when it's required. The aids help with cleaning, cooking, bathing, making sure they take all their medications, pretty much everything. I think it's worth looking into.

Amy, I am so sorry you are going through this. This should be a happy time for you and hubby and you shouldn't feel selfish at all.

Can his parents not get any type of home health care for his father? Surely your husband could agree to an alternative solution than him being away from home so much....surely he can see the strain it is putting on you physically and emotionally. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Amy,

So sorry you are having to go through this, especially right before a huge change in your lives.  The situation is stressful and requires delicate handling for sure.

I would contact your local Agency for the Aging.  They could possibly help you with the matter.  They have  numerous resources for these type of situations.  I am not sure what type or amount of income his parents have... but it could be possible for him to get rehab at home with a personal rehab therapist.

Also, I know  you are affiliated with a church... maybe you could put in a request through the church for some of the paritioners to help you all out.  Maybe they could volunteer some time in shifts and come stay with his dad while you guys are at work.  Another thing is... if they cannot afford someone to come in to do personal rehab, send out the word that you need assistance in this area.  Maybe there is someone in the church that does this type of work, or maybe a spouse, sister, nephew, cousin... etc. That could come a few hours a week and help.  Maybe teach you all certain excercises that he can do to improve his various skills that have been affected by the stroke/attack.

Also, check into meals-on-wheels (another thing that Agency on the Aging can help in coordinating)

Remind Tom that he needs to reach out to other people when in need.  No one person can handle it all... all the time.  There are agencies, resources and people that are willing to help.  Just reach out!

Hugs, Love and Prayers
