I know this has been asked...

I'm considering applying for a part time position as a pre-k teacher.  I am bored out of my mind and we could use the extra money.

Do I tell them I'm pregnant?  I don't want to deceive anyone.  I know it is illegal for them not to hire me when they know I'm pregnant, however they can choose who they hire, and can choose not to hire me and blame it on another reason.

I am 7 months preggo but people still have a hard time figuring out whether I'm pregnant or simply fat, so if I go in for an interview, they might not be able to tell by my appearance.

There is no easy answer for this, I'm just asking for opinions!

Thanks!

I'll stay completely away from the "moral" issue of the debate, but here's my take.  If this is a field you want to be in when you return to the workforce, I wouldn't do it.  Word of mouth can be a killer, and I'm betting especially when it comes to teachers.  As most employers would frown on what you want to do (right or wrong), it may cause you to leave behind a singed bridge, if not a burned one, kwim?

If this would be a one off and you have no intention of ever teaching at this level, in this district, etc, ever again, go for it :)

Honestly, I wouldn't do it.  You are only a couple of month or so away from delivery and by the time that you get the job and actually start..you will be that much closer to being on maternity leave.  I agree with the previous poster.  If you really want to work in that field, you shouldn't potentially burn that bridge.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do...

Hi there,
Working in education is not something to be taken lightly. Many of us are highly schooled, highly trained people who are terribly commited to our work with children. I am guessing that like most states, NJ has qualifications that must be met to work in pre-k, such as Early Childhood Development hours and class units. If not, at least consider the amount of training the school will put into your work in the school, not to mention the relationships you will form with the children and then leave.
I would consider doing something else since you may not be in a position to commit. Teaching is a serious commitment, not just something to do because you are bored.
Hope you are well!

I just got my BA in psychology and have worked in elementary Ed before.  I was planning on looking for a long term job. this job is 3 days a week and if i was hired i would come back after the baby was born.  maybe i was unclear, but i wasn't just going to ditch the job after the baby was here.  i was actually hoping i could bring her to work with me being that half the preschool is a day care center.

are you a teacher?  i went into college with a ed. major but ended up with a major in psych with a minor in Spanish.  thanks for the reply!

Oh, nice! So you totally have the experience you need! I have some friends who work in preschools and are able to bring their children. That's a pretty ideal situation! Yes, I am a teacher. I am home for a while with Lydia, but I teach 8th grade ELD - I minored in second language acqisition!
Well, good luck to you! I hope it works out! :-)

I recently applied for a therapist position becuase it is the position of my dreams. During my interview I did not mention it, when we began talking about pay and benefits I informed her that I was pregnant. We talked about the need for me to be out 8-10 weeks once the baby was born and HR being able to hold my position. I am still being considered for the position- recently had a second interview and they are checking my references...telling people is def. up to you, but I think being upfront helps with brownie points becuase if they do offer you the job it'll need to be addressed and they'll wonder why you didn't tell them. It hasn't hurt me in my experience.

I wish you luck!

I just had a job interview 2 weeks ago and purposely wore a baggy shirt to hide the fact that I was pregnant. This is a second job for me cause we need the money too. I feel bad cause I used to work for them and I was hiding the fact that I'm pregnant, but I just know they wouldn't hire me if they knew. I got offered the job on Monday. I am worried about how to tell them once I start working or when. I think I'm not going to say anything unless I have to or if someone out right asks me, then I will tell.
