Quick Question

Ok, so my surgery is on Monday and my pre op appointment is tomorrow and I'm TOTALLY excited!!!!! I'm getting RNY. Anyways, I want kids really bad... of course not right now, I need to wait I know that. But my question is (and it may be a dumb one) but what form of birth control should i do. I'm kinda hesitant about the pill or the ring or anything like that, because when I'm ready to get pregnant, i don't want to be held back because Ive been on the pill for too long.... I don't want the shot and Dr's wont give me an IUD. So from yalls experience what should i do???

Thanks!

Well you pretty much got rid of all the options I can think of except condoms or abstinence.  I used the ring as birth control after my surgery and it worked great.

It seems to me your only option is condoms, then. I have heard from other members that have had RYN that you need to use two methods. You may have to use a pill or the ring.

Good Luck,
Emily

I went through fertility treatment to get pregnant prior to my RNY and had 3 failed cycles.....I was on the pill after my surgery and not using another method. My surgeon told me I could stop taking the pill 3 months after my surgey as long as we were careful becuase I was worried about the pill too..I was pregnat 2 weeks later, so USUALLY after the surgery it is very easy to get pregnant but there are women who still have trouble. Just know that you need to really follow your surgeons guidelines and when they say okay go for it....but really do use two forms if you want to lose the weight first! Good luck with both your surgery and your hopeful pregnancy.

I wouldn't use the pill since you may not absorb it correctly and end up with an unplanned early post-op pregnancy. With the ring you take it out once a month to allow for a period and you put a new one back in after 7 days.  Your fertility returns to how it was pre-ring use very quickly at least mine did.  I got pregnant within a few months of discontinuing it.

I used the ring and got pg right after taking it out.  After my daughter was born I had an iud which was in for 18 months or so.  It took me over a year to get pg after having the iud out.

I loved the ring though.  It didn't feel weird at all.

I too had RNY and was on pills for about 10 years before we started TTC. I went off of them the end of January, got pregnant in April. Miscarried in June, got the OK to TTC in July and was pregnant in August. My cycles regulated the 2nd month of being off of the pill. For the first 6 months after surgery we were told to use a barrier method as well because not everyone absorbs the pill correctly, so condoms it was.

Good luck with your surgery monday!

I was on the pill for 5 years and the nuva ring 2 years post op and it only took me 4 months to get pregnant.  The hormones come out of your system as soon as you stop using them and have your first period.  You don't want to get pregnant too early, I would go with the ring!

Good luck Monday!

I have a friend who got pregnant while on the pill after RNY because she didn't absorb it all...just a warning. I used the NuvaRing and highly recommend it. With this form of BC you wouldn't have to use 2 since absorption isn't an issue. I stopped using it and was pregnant within 2 months. I had a miscarriage and was pregnant again in 5 months. Most people don't have an issue when they stop taking this type of BC. The one's that are usually an issue are the DP shot and the IUD.

Good Luck on Monday!!!
