Loss Weight/Can't get Pregnant

It is truly ironic.  The reason why I had the surgery is so I can be healthy to have a healthy pregnancy.  I've accomplished this (I've lost 124 pounds).  My husband and I have been trying for 6 months...and nothing.  I am at the doctor's office every month to see how things are going.  It is very frustrating when you want something so badly.  I have an appointment tomorrow to discuss how we are going be more "aggressive."  Any suggestions out there?  Thank you for your help.

My story was the same. For years I was told that my weight was the main cause of my issues. It was further complicated by PCOS. So I lost weight in homes of getting preggo easy but not the case. However, I will tell you not being overweight does help because it is one less issue the doctors have to deal with in your quest to conceive. They will likely run tests, possibly start you on meds, and take it from there. Unless you know of medical issues you or your partner have it could just be that it is taking time, 6+ months is about the normal period for those trying. I wish you the best. I had success after two years and medical assistance and have a healthy and happy 2 year old son.

JUlie - so sorry to hear you are having a hard time :( Has hubby been tested? I've heard that is the easiest thing to try first. (all here say - thank god we didn't have to go that route this time)

THoughts and prayers that a healthy pregnancy is right around the corner!

Are your cycles regular? Labs normal? Are you still loosing?

There are many things other than weight that can cause a couple not to become pregnant.  My RE thinks that pretty much the only reason weight will be a factor in GETTING pregnant is if ovulation is inconsistent or non-existent...which it is for many heavy women (not too mention women who are too thin).  Now, once pregnant, weight can lead to a harder 9 months...but getting pregnant relies on ovulation.

I have always ovulated normally (before surgery and after) -- and now, after having gained some weight back -- I still ovulate normally.  All tests are good.  Everything is unexplained.  Some women are just unfortunate in that "something" is causing issues.  Or, in some cases, many somethings.

Having said all this, 6 months is really not a long time.  I know it may seem like forever to you, but the average couple conceives in 8 months.  I wouldn't worry about getting any invasive testing done until you hit the 1 year mark.

Can you tell us what you have been doing?  Do you temp?  Do you use OPKs?  I also suggest (and as you can see, I have been at this awhile) that if you ovulate on your own -- do not do clomid.  Some studies suggest that it does more harm than good because it can thin the lining and dry you out.  If they want to put you on something, ask for femara.

I know this is hard to hear, but 6 months is not extrodinarily long. I think most doctors won't do tests for infertility until you've tried for a year. Well, that actually depends on your age. If you're over 35 they may test after 6 months. I know it's really hard. Believe me, I've tried for 5 years & I've had 2 miscarriages. So, I am not just telling you this without any experience. I know 6 months seems like a long time, but it's totally normal.

Are you taking the ovulation tests? Did you have PCOS before surgery? If you are ovulating, it might just be a timing thing. I really wish you luck. I hope your doctors can help.

I miscarried about a month before surgery - was actually waiting for the 1st ultrasound to cancel my surgery date when I found out that it wasn't going to happen.. Anyway, post-op I did nothing to prevent pregnancy and it still took us 11 months to conceive.. and G-d knows we "practiced" often enough... It took me going to the OB for a visit where I threatened to buy Clomid off the internet and take it by the handful (I wouldn't really have done that!...)  if he didn't help me to get the ball rolling.  The doc, of course, ordered some tests first - 3rd day of cycle, 21st day of cycle (to measure the quality of your ovulation) and 2 different types of ultrasounds to start.  He must have scared the bejesus out of my ovaries because I only made it as far as the first blood test and poof, I was pregnant!  Even now at 14 wks, after having seen the ultrasound and heartbeat, I STILL don't believe it finally happened to me. It will happen when you're good and ready.. Good things come to those who wait!

Just came back from OBG and she now recommends we go to a specialist.  Husband has not been tested so this is a good thing.  Our appointment is Friday.  I will keep you posted.  Thank you for all the well wishes.  I feel so alone in this.

I had an RNY in 2002 in hopes of losing weight so that I could eventually get pregnant after losing a great deal of weight I still had not gotten pregnant.  For the longest I continued to beat myself up for not being able to get pregnant, blaming PCOS, weight gain, and anything else that could have possibly caused me to be the problem (for lack of a better word).  I really never thought that maybe my late husband could be part of the problem until having a tearful heart to heart converstion with my doctor.  I was never able to get him to get tested, but after several conversation we came to the conclusion that his weight may have been a factor in our infertility issues.  Well, I ended up having some issues with my original surgery and had a revision done recently (June 2009) and have since lost more weight.  I recently found out that I am pregnant after years of ttc.
