New with Questions
So I am 20 months out from RNY and just tested positive on 1/3/10, which is odd because my period isn't due until this Saturday 1/9/10. This will be my second child first one post op. So my questions is in regards of vitamins, since I can't get an appointment until I am least 8-10 weeks from what the doctors office told me. So do I need to switch to a prenatal, or is it okay to continue on with my regular vitamins which consist of two multi vitamins a day, 4 500 mg calcium citrate a day, and 1 1000 mcg sublingual B-12 tablets a day? What are you ladies taking as far a vitamins?
Thanks in advance,
Tiffany

Not sure on all brands of prenatals but I bought the one source prenatals from Walmart and they were good. Well not good, but I took them. I took 2 prenatals a day,1 prevacid,4 calcium and a b12 shot once a month. That was my regiment. It worked out well though. Make sure to add extra water and carbs also. Good luck and congrats!!

The difference between regular vitamins and prenatals are the B's, vitamin A, and iron. If you were to add a b-complex, iron (which you will need), and some folic acid, you could stick with your regular vitamin.
The deal with vitamin A is that vitamin A as retinol in NORMIES in too high of a dose can be fetaltoxic. But the problem with us is that beta-carotene doesn't absorb in a low-acid environment, or outside the duodenum (which is bypassed in the RNY and DS) so getting your vitamin A as beta-carotene is not helpful. And the baby needs vitamin A.. it's one of those things -- baby needs enough, but not too much. I'm guessing your multis use a combo of BC and retinol for vitamin A, so I doubt you're getting too much as retinol, so not a problem.
Plan on asking for a full blood draw on your first appt, then every 8 week after asking for b1, folate, b12, ferritin, serum iron, hct, hgb, pth, and 0,25(OH)D -- that's neurological, blood, and bone health for both mama and baby. Supplement from there. Those are the ones that tend to drop fastest in post-RNY mamas. Get your hands on your own labs and track the trends.. if you see them slide, then don't wait for them to hit deficiency stage, start to supplement immediately.
Beyond that, if you have any questions, let us know. Congrats :-)
