How long did you wait after surgery to get pregnant?

Talked to my dr and he said if my weight loss has tapered off, he will ok me after 12 months which was very surprising to me. The other dr I had spoken to said 2 to 3 years, which is why I was asking.

I didn't realize that not all drs recommended a 24-36 month wait. I thought that would be kind of a standard thing, but I am seeing it is more on a patient-by-patient basis. Nice to know that I could get the go-ahead in as little as a year, but we will probably wait 18 months.

Thanks for the responses everyone. It's been very informative!

I had RNY in April 09 and got pg in Dec. 09.  My dr. typically recommends 18-24 months wait but with my age, I asked him at my 6 month check up and he said to go ahead.  We got pregnant the 2nd cycle after that.

I had my surgery (VSG) in August 2008 and conceived in October 2008...this was after 9 long years of fertility issues!  It wasn't intentional...I just found out that I ovulate on day 24 of a 28 day cycle so abstaining around mid cycle didn't work!!! My doctor recommended waiting 12 to 18 months but once I was pregnant he assured me that there would be no issues with the pregnancy and the surgery but only that my weight loss may not be as successful...I celebrated my 1 year anniversary in August 2009 with the most beautiful and perfect baby girl and was  100 pounds down in weight!  I'd say that was a success...I still have 35 pounds to go but just found out I'm expecting again so my intention is now to be at goal on my third surgivrsary...with the added benefit of 2 babies!  The biggest draw back with my pregnancies was/is the reflux that I have acquired since having my surgery.  Between pregnancies I went off my somac and felt great...as soon as I conceieved this one I was straight back on the somac and suffering horrible reflux...I don't know whether this would have been any better further out but it's a small price to pay at the end of the day.  Good luck with you surgery and future pregnancy plans...I hope it all works out for you!
