How long did you wait after surgery to get pregnant?

Hi All-

New here, so I do apologize if there is a simple way to find a thread somewhere that has already covered this. I am kind of learning the ropes.

Anyway, I just wanted to see how long everyone waited after surgery- particularly VSG, but all surgeries really- to get preg. Was it as long as the dr recommended? Any complications due to surgery?

I am having VSG on Feb 24. Prior to deciding on surgery, we were trying for baby #1. Had an early miscarriage in July, and decided to wait for babies and have surgery. If my dr is adamant, I will wait the recommended time for safety's sake, but I just wanted to do an informal poll and see if everyone else did.

Thanks!

I was told to wait 18-24 month or until I had been at a stable weight for 6 months and all labs were good. WE started TTC at 2 years out.

I didn't want to go through another pregnancy being 260, so I put off having my 3rd child till after I had my RNY surgery and lost the weight.  I had my RNY in June 2008 and got pg in July 2009.   I had my IUD removed in May 2009 and got pg the first time we tried in July!  This was a shock because both my kids took a long time to conceive (1st took 2 yrs and 2nd took 14 months and 2 rounds of Clomid).

I bet your fertility will improve greatly once you have surgery and lose the weight.   My bariatric doc said to wait at least a year to 18 months until you try to get pg.   He also said to wait until your weight has stabilized and you stop losing weight for a few months.

Good luck on your VSG, I was thinking about doing that one too but ended up doing RNY (I was self pay).

Hit goal weight of 140 at 13 months out from RNY!! 130 pounds GONE!

My surgeon recommended going on birth control for at least 12-18 months post-surgery to make sure that pregnancy didn't occur during the rapid weightloss phase.  BCP makes me "crazy" so to speak, so I never bothered and Hubby and I did nothing to prevent pregnancy.  It took almost 12 months for us to conceive, and I am now almost 4 months pregnant. Best of luck with your VSG - this is probably one of the best things you'll ever do for yourself, and if you're like most of us, you'll have a much easier go of conceiving once the extra weight is gone.

I hit goal within 6 months of my revision from band to VSG. Now, that I'm at goal, and trying to maintain, we will start TTC around April.

I go back this month for some labs, if everything with my labs looks good, and I can maintain my goal weight, we will definitely start in April.

I had RNY in Feb, and found out i was pregnant in september.  so it was about 6 or 7mths out. It was kind of a "i got too cute moment" lol!! The Doctor said it would have been better if i waited longer, but we will be okay as long as i get enough carbs and nutrients. I wouldve liked to have waited til MY goal, but i was only 25 lbs away from it when i found out i was preggers. I've only gained 5lbs and im 5months now, so we will see!! Im 268 now, i was 346 surgery day.
Preggers and STILL killin em in these streets baby!!!

Some people were preggo when they had WLS, or accidentally got preggo afterward.  You have to listen to your doc though.  He/She may clear you early (some after only 6 mos) but if you can't obey them, it's a sign of not being ready.
