Considering DS; want to conceive

I had been banded and lost about 80 pounds- and then a month ago my band slipped and had to be removed in an emergency surgery. I am thinking about going for a DSwitch, but am wondering what the advisement is for pregnancy- how long do I need to wait? Does it make a difference that I've already done the WLS thing once? my "clock" is ticking and I'm just not sure what to do!!!!

Not so sure about ds, but with rny it is recommended to wait 12-18 months. The ds has more malabsorbtion I believe, so hopefully others will chime in. Good luck in your decision. I had rny to improve my chances at having children...the results are in my siggy. Shari

The recommendation is 18-24 months.

There are a few DSers who have had successful pregnancies -- very healthy babies all!

With any malasborptive surgery (RNY or DS) and during any period of rapid weight loss you should wait to conceive.

The timeframes for RNY and DS are usually a 12-18 month window after surgery.  You want to make sure your weight loss has leveled off.  This is because rapid weight loss during pregnancy could harm the baby's brain development.

I had my DS in 2005 and Cooper in 2009.  Not because I was worried about being pregnant after the DS, but that is just how my cir****tances fell.

I was blessed with a normal and healthy pregnancy and a handsome little man.

I love my DS -- it affords me the ability to eat normal (and often more than normal) without fear of regaining my weight.  Food has always been a "comfort" for me and I was terrified that weight loss surgery would take it away - but DS has allowed me that comfort  within  moderation.

I was as heavy as 412 lbs (I suspect I was heavier, but no scale would weigh me) and I was as low as 148 at my lowest.  I stabilzed around 155-160 until I got pregnant.  Now I am in the 170's -- baby weight!

Good Luck in your decisions!

My surgeon suggested two forms of birth control for two years.  Or until your weight has been stable for 3 months, I think.

I got pregnant one year post-op though, at 30 pounds away from goal.  And after the initial freak-out, I'm now calm about it.  I've got to be more vigilant about my labs but I think it'll turn out okay.

I was told to wait 18-24 months or until wait loss stabilized. I Love my DS. I have stabilized at weight loss, but I also eat more carbs now. Trying to stay out of ketosis because TTC. I would do my DS over and over again. I was 310 at surgery and I am 170 now. I am newly married and TTC at 36 years old. I finally have the life I have always wanted thanks to my DS!! The previous surgery should not effect pregnancy but may effect your DS surgery, your surgeon will have to evaluate, but there are many many revision DS surgeries!! Good Luck
