OT:Tax Q...
Due to all of the medical issues/tests I had this year, and the fact that my son spent 2 weeks in the NICU we are at over $6K in medical bills for 2009 (and that is without premiums!). We are definately over the 7.5 % allowed to be able to claim medical on our taxes.
The question I had was on mileage. I know we are allowed .24 a mile for dr. visits/tests etc. Does anyone know if I would be able to claim the miles I used when I when was going up to the NICU 2X a day to see my son once I was released? Is this stretching it? I don't wan't to claim miles for something if I am not entitled to it. The mileage is definately not going to be the "breaker" for us. On the other hand, if I am entitled to claim it and don't it would a sizeable amount I would miss out on.
What are your guys opinions? Is there anyone who is a CPA? or a Tax person?
Debbie

I am not a CPA, but have done quite a bit with taxes in the past (work, school, home). Anything with taxes can be sticky and taken in different contexts.
I, personally, would say that since your child is a dependent and relied on you for your support that you could deduct it. However, call a local CPA office and I am sure they would be able to assist you. You may even try calling a local office that processes taxes and tell them you want to have everything ready to bring in to do your taxes and you had a question whether or not you should include the mileage...

Thanks! I thought about doing that...
I also thought about calling the IRS phone number as well.
I, myself wasn't going up 2X a day. I was going up until about 1 or 2 in the afternoon, and then my husband was going up the afternoons until 7 or 8 pm so that way one of us was with him most of the day. At least we could argue it was "reasonable".

True. If it were me I would write it off. Here is more info, although not in depth.

I'm not a CPA- however I do have my B.A. in Accounting and have worked in the tax field in the past.........
You can claim the mileage for your trips to the NICU- at the reduce medical rate of 24 cents per mile
http://www.irs.gov/taxpros/article/0,,id=156624,00.html
As long as your over the 7.5% - you can claim mileage to all doctors appointments, hospital visits.... heck you could claim mileage to the pharmacy if you were picking up prescriptions-- anything medical related. It was necessary for you to go to the NICU daily and abo****ely reasonable.
Like the PP said you can always call your local IRS office if you'd like.
