Questions for people who have gone to a RE

I have an appointment with the RE on Jan 12th. I know my insurance will not cover this as I only have coverage for paps and routine care when it comes to OB. Did any of you pay for the services out of pocket and around how much did it run?
Thanks Ladies!
P.S.
Hope you all have a wonderful New Year!

Our insurance covered everything (with the exception of the IVF itself), but there were a few appointments that we prepaid and got reimbursed from insurance after.

Our first appointment included the Dr. visit and a routine ultrasound.   Total cost was about $300.

Not including medication, but I'm going to estimate that had we paid for all of the RE appointments it would have been an additional $3000 including the appointments, ultrasounds, and blood work.

Double check your insurance.  If you are being SENT for medical reasons it may be covered.  It won't be covered if it is your choice to go to get pregnant.  My type of plan was similar (only paps and routine checkups) but because I was sent for having no periods after 6 mos. coming off depo it was covered as a hormonal investigation that then turned into undiagnosed infertility with all that involved and 8 IUIs.  I was also 43 at the time so age and possible menopause factored in.

Hey Amy,
Looks like you got some good answers. My insurance did not cover fertility either but when seeing the Re initially I was referred due to my cycle being abnormal, possible PCOS, etc so tests were covered up to the point of diagnosis but once that went through and further tests were to help with TTC etc they were not. Meds varied depending on what it was....typically Clomid ran about $65 a cycle with no insurance coverage and when I did Femara it was only a $10 because that was covered because it is a breast cancer medication essential. Same thing with Metformin/Glucophage because it is a diabestes med. HCG shots were about $45..that was pharmacy fee, doctor fee separate. I think u/s to check follicles etc were btwn $175-200 a piece. Not sure on the doctors visit fees...but in range of $100+ but sometimes there are discounts and such. At one point my insurance paid a bunch of stuff and then ended up charging it back but that was a whole other issue and by then I was preggo so did not care. Hope that helps. Good Luck!

You can go to www.femara.com and print of a certificate for free 30 day supply of Femara.  Your doctor has to fill it out as a perscription.  Print and take with to your appointment if you're interested.

You can also go to freedomfertility.com to get discounts on Ovidrel and other fertility meds.  I paid $85 at Walgreens only to find out that it is $45 online!  My new RE told me about it!  You need a special perscription that can be faxed in.  Check out the website before going to the RE if you're interested.

HTH!

Generic Clomid is also available at Walmart for $9/month.  It would have been much more with my insurance.  I don't use Walmart as my regular pharmacy so I just didn't give them my insurance information.

Thanks for the tips you guys. I will just have to wait and see what they recommend for me. My problem has not been getting pregnant so far, It just keeping the babies.... that has been the real issue. So I don't know maybe its hormone... Progesterone? I have never had it checked only my HCG levels. I am also going to my regular doctor to have my vitamin levels checked. I want to make sure all is well on that front. I will keep you posted.

I got pregnant twice and lost them at 5 and 6 weeks.  The doctor put me on clomid for the next cycle and then we started progesterone suppositories right away when I got my positive test.  I don't know if it made the difference or not but Gabriel will be here in the next few weeks.

Have them check your thyroid level also.  My sister and sister-in-law had problems with miscarriages in early pregnancy and both had thyroid issues.  Once those were resolved, they had healthy babies.
