Brief Triplet Update
Baby A - Eli William, born at 2 lbs 1 oz and 14 inches long. Weighed in tonight at 2 lbs 12 oz. He is now 15 inches long. He had a shunt put in almost two weeks ago. He is on full feedings (tube feedings, cannot suck and eat yet) and is gaining weight well. His ultra sounds for the last two weeks on his head are showing that the pressure has been resolved by the shunt. He had an infection set in this last week and was put on antibiotics. The staff of course recognized his symptoms before the blood tests actually showed any positive cultures but the blood work showed his white blood cells were elevated. He is only on a week of antibiotics because they caught it so quickly. He had to be reintubated for a few days because he was suffering from lethargy and affected his breathing ability. He was extubated again yesterday and is good, strong and stable.
Baby B - Charlie Peyton (girl), born at 2 lbs 2 oz and 14 inches long. Weighed in tonight at 2 lbs 13 oz. and 15 inches long. She had a shunt put in a week ago tomorrow. She is on full feedings again (had to stop for the surgery) and is gaining weight well. Her ultrasound today showed that her ventricles have decompressed so the shunt is doing its job very well. She has completely changed. She is making eye contact, awake alot and is progressing QUICKLY. Two days after her surgery they felt she was ready to be extubated (she had HORRIBLE lung issues including two chest tubes) but the concern was that due to her recent surgery and her swelling and tender head the CPAP mask could not be put on her head. So they decided to give her an opportunity to be put on nasal cannullas. We were warned that she would most likely not be on it long because they did not feel she was ready for the cannullas but the more time on a respirator the more likely they will have lung problems. They took her off the respirator Friday morning and she is STILL going strong. The doctors and nurses are impressed. I got to Kangaroo her again this morning. She is also sucking on a pacifier, just started today. They are putting drops of breast milk into her mouth with the pacifier so that she can get a taste for it also. She is a strong little fighter and we are very excited about her.
Baby C - Caleb Aaron, born at 1 lb 15 oz and 14 inches long. Weighed in tonight at 3 lbs even. He is our big eater. He is still on the respirator, they are weaning him to try and get him on the CPAP. He is touchy though, he has several good days and announce they are going to extubate him in the morning and he promptly has a bad night. Then he will have a bad day and then they start weaning him again and the cycle starts again. We have been doing this for two weeks. He had a pretty severe infection and was on two weeks of antibiotics and was off of feedings for a week but he has definitely bounced back from that. His ultrasounds for the last two weeks have been stable and the doctor told me this morning that he felt that he would probably not need a shunt put in, that it would be surprising for it to bleed more and that it was most likely going to resolve without surgery intervention, YAY!!! Two surgeries was more than enough. He is ACTIVE, escapes his little beds constantly and yanks his leads off all of the time. He is also constantly trying to pull the tube out of his own throat. He makes good eye contact and is very responsive when we talk to him. He has been Kangarooed twice, once by dad and once by me. It is difficult with him on the respirator and they will let us do it once every few days.
So right now things are positive and moving forward well. Thank you everyone, as you can see the positive thoughts, loving support and the prayers are doing its work!!! Keep them coming and I will keep the updates coming.
I'm glad to hear that your little blessings are being blessed with so many doses of strength. You sound much more optimistic now than the last time I saw your post (I may have missed some...I've been in transit for a week or two here). I'm glad to see that they're all gaining weight and all things considered doing well.
Post some more pictures when you can...and keep up the good work. I can only imagine how you look forward to those few minutes of kangaroo time.
