my twins were born on 11/23 at 37w 5d

i wanted them circumcised, the hospital said they would not do it because i have a private doctor and he only delivers his patients there, so my kids were hands off!!!!!!!!!!

i called my ob/gyn's office and was told he does it in the office i said great, then i was told $200.00 each baby..............the insurance don't pay his asking price so that was a out of pocket price..........

today my babies are 5 weeks old and i went to a urologist and was told this should be done as soon as they are born in hospital, during the 1st 7 days after birth the pain is bare to none, after the 7 days they are required to give general anesthesia however not recommended until after the age of 1

i am going to call the hospital where i delivered and complain, my boys shouldnt be forced to wait until age 1, they will be in soo much pain i am sure-at age 1 they are crawling, walking, being picked up more friction to that area, i assume more painful

thanks for reading my vent

any advice would help, cause i feel bad right now knowing they will be in pain

I have three boys, all circumcised a month or more after delivery due to preterm and health issues.  NONE needed general anesthesia, only a local anesthetic.  The youngest is not even two years old and was born in Sacramento, not a behind the times area.

None of them suffered any great pain, initial crying but nothing afterwards, usually just from the being held down or strapped to the board, depending on the doctor.  Never had any issues, or problems with any of them or their circumcisions.  If you wait til they are older you will have issues with the pain though.  My father in law had a circumcision when he was 5 years old and remembers how HORRIBLE it was.  Find another doctor.  I have NEVER heard of any doctor recommending that you wait until they are over 1 year old and NEVER had a child circumcised at the hospital, insurance does not cover circumcision, it is considered elective surgery, and I have had to pay out of pocket for all three of them.

My son was not cir****ized at birth due to cultural reasons from my husband's side (they cir****ize kids when they're around 5-6 years).  After my son was a month or two old, my husband decided I'd been right and should have gotten it done at the hospital, then when we talked to the dr about doing it at that time, they said that if they're not done immediately at the hospital at birth, that they won't do it until they're 2 years old because they don't want to anesthetize them unnecessarily when they're younger.  My son was done at 2 years old and really didn't have any problems with it.  They wrap it all up in cotton gauze and you have to clean it several times a day, but he didn't act like he was in terrible amounts of pain.  The insurance paid for it at 2 years old.  On the other hand...when/if we ever have another one...he'll be done at the hospital before he comes home.

Hi, I usually just lurk on this board.  I just wanted to let you know that my son had a lot of health issues when he was born so this wasn't an option for us at birth.  His was done once we got to a pediatric rehab hospital and he was about 8 weeks old at the time.  They did not use general anesthesia on him.

Good luck to you.

Sorry you have to deal with all these issues. I remember being stressed about this issue as well. I was warned to make sure I chose a pediatrician that had priveledges at the same hospital my OB did and that I would deliver at so the circumcision could be done in the hospital by the pedi. Otherwise, it would have to be done in office later. However, as Holly mentioned, due to cultural issues (Muslim/Arabic) sometimes boys wait longer depending on expense, family, etc. My husband's nephews were all circumcises in Morocco, some as late as 5-6 years old, others at 3 years old, and some at about 1-2. They all did well, and did not get general anesthesia or local. There are two different procedures that I know of that are done here in the states, one involves a ring that makes the procedure quicker and relatively painless and they can use local such as cream/gel to numb. As PP said they wrap it well and as long as you clean and maintain it, all should be ok. The doctors at the hospital showed me a method on how to use 2 diapers on the baby while it heals and that also helps. Emad had general anesthesia at 6 mths, for a tongue tie procedure that had to be done because they overlooked it in the hospital when it could be a quick procedure, and he was fine. I am not sure if they did the anesthesia because the surgery was considered required, although really it was elective, and he could wait til later but like you I wanted it as quick as possible for as less pain as possible.  I hope it all works out. Best of luck.
