BV...ugh!
As if the bleeding and strange HCG counts weren't enough to have me super stressed lately my OB decides to leave me a message that there is a prescription waiting for me and to call her about the details.
Called her and the "I'm having a bad day and ur gonna know it" nurse answered, said that i showed signs of Bacterial Vaginosis after pap two weeks ago, says that its nothing to be concerned with and that it would be quickly cleared up with the prescription they called in for me. Simple enough right?! yea well besides the fact that i totally feel "dirty" after finding this out lol. Ive never had a bacterial infection before, so what do i know!
Anyway my issue is with the medication they want me to take (Metronidazole), i picked it up and in the little info packet it states in big ALL CAPS and BOLD letters, "DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE IN YOUR FIRST 3 MONTHS OF PREGNANCY" !
Sooo i call the Dr and YAY i get the "I'm having a bad day and ur gonna know it" nurse again *sigh!
i tell her my findings and express my concern as i am still in the first trimester of my pregnancy.
She says to me " ummm YEAH the Dr obviously knows ur pregnant and told u to take it SO take it!"
I decided not to be so nice anymore and said that i would wait while she checked with my Dr on the benefits and risks of the medication and that i basically wanted to know WHY it said i shouldn't be taking this medicine in the first 3 months of pregnancy and WHY my Dr felt it was ok to still take it. Basically i wanted to know if the benefit outweighed the risks or if it would be better that i wait 2 1/2 weeks to take it when I've completed the first trimester! needless to say she wasn't happy, left me on hold forever and finally came back and in a completely different tone said " Dr lee said to take it because BV is known to cause preterm labor and that the meds are a class B, which show no harm to a fetus!
So i took that and now I'm home STILL thinking about it lol. I know that i should trust my Dr, but in all honestly I'm just still iffy about taking the meds, with all that has happened recently I'm just scared. Ive only met with this Dr once, we haven't really built a rapport but i feel like a bad patient if i continue to question this...
So wondering if anyone has a) had to deal with BV while pregnant and b) has anyone taken/not taken the meds during the first trimester for any particular reason
any insight will be helpful. thanks in advance!

thank you for responding Amy, ive been reading anything and everything i can find all day today and so far the risks of waiting to take the meds seem to outweigh the benefits of allowing it to go untreated until the 2nd trimester.
Im going to start taking the meds with my dinner today! wish me luck =)

I get Bv quite often. Not from being dirty though. Sometimes its just how things work out in us. The are is so sensitive to any changes. I have a bladder disease too so since I have a constant UTI it causes BV. Also if we have sex too often I get BV. Its the change in whats in there and all that can cause it also. The infection though will cause problems with your pregnancy so make sure to take the meds. It is true it will cause preterm labor. The meds work pretty quickly though so thats a great thing. I hate getting the infections too but remember its nothing gross or anything. I sure hope it gets better for you!!

Let me start off with I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. I, unfortunately, have dealt with BV almost every cycle (32-34 days) since almost a year out from my RNY. It F*$&ing sucks and had pretty much killed my sex drive!!!! I never once got it while I was pregnant, which is bizarre since that is when it is most common. I thought it might have been because I was really good about taking my vitamins. Who knows. However, I finally got desperate and paid for the 3 Day BV Cure book that you can buy online. I would be more than happy to send it to you, although I am not really following what it suggests. However, I have found something that has started to work for me for the past two months now. I was so tired of taking the antibiotics because they made me feel so sick, and they taste freaking disgusting. I have started taking acidophilus once a day, every day and have not yet had another infection.
BV is an over abundance of bad bacteria that just kind of takes over the good bacteria. Well, you take an antibiotic and it kills both bacteria and then after the antibiotics are over both bacteria come back. Usually the good bacteria grows at a slower pace than the bad, and sperm for some reason makes it worse (smell wise). It is awful. So, I would highly recommend also taking acidophilus along with your antibiotics so the good bacteria can grow faster than the bad. (obviously make sure this is okay with your doctor first).

Blanca, I am a nurse practitioner and yes, the flagyl is a class B antibiotic. The risks of BV to the fetus are much higher than the risks of taking flagyl. Also BV can cause infertility if left untreated. It can travel up and cause PID which can then cause infertility. Please take the meds and listen to your doc. Good Luck!!
