Just found out I'm pregnant, scared
Hi everyone, I am new to this board and obesity help as well. I just found out I am pregnant and am currently 31 weeks.
I know that sounds crazy but woah, try having it happen to you. I had gastric bypass in 1/2009. I started out at 460 lbs and have now lost about 150 so far. I started a new ralstionship not long after I had surgery and was on birth control and using condoms. One night the condom broke. I still got what I thought was my period every month and even took 2 pregnancy test just to make sure about 4 and 6 weeks after the incident they both came back negative.
So it was really freaky when I had a minor fender bender wedsnday and went to the Dr just to be checked out at my sisters urging. They ran a pregnancy test on me just as routine and it came back positive, so they did and ultrasound and I almost fainedt when they told me how far along I was. I guess I didn't relize I was pregnant because I am still over 300 lbs and have a lot of loose skin. I just figured the weird eating was due to surgery.
I go to the Dr on monday but I am really scared about the baby. I have not been doing everything I should being pregnant. I have smoked about a half a pack a day and have even drank on about 6-7 occasions both beer and liquor. I never got stupid drunk but I did drink 3-4 drinks at a time on the occasions.
Has this ever happened to anyone else? Could the drinking be worse or less because I don't absorb as much as a normal person? I am just so scared that something will be wrong with my baby because I did drink. Any advice would be great.
Oh also the er tech that did the ultrasound said thet the baby was measuring where it was supposed to be and that she was 85% sure it was a girl due to the way she was laying she couldn't be 100% so I am relivied about that

Amy,
Funny how things work out...the car accident was actuallly a God send or you may have been having a baby at home!!!! As far as alcohol goes...the rule as we all know is to abstain...however, I think your having an occasional drink here or there will not cause fetal alcohol syndrome. I am not a doctor, so I would definitely ask your OB on Monday, Just get your blood work done...make sure you are getting all your vitamins and nutrients in...and start hitting Babies R Us like crazy...you have about 9 weeks to get this all going....HOW EXCITING!!!
Congratulations to you and keep us posted on how your appointment went :)

Ah! How crazy!
Don't freak out too much your drinking/smoking doesn't sound excessive or anything. Get yourself to an OB quick, though! Make sure everything is going alright and find out what you have to do (if anything) for the rest of the pregnancy to ensure a healthy baby.
A friend told me today that her mom smoked pot the entire time she was pregnant with her and she's okay so...lol.

Ugh! I feel for you cause if this happened to me, I'd be a freaking nervous wreck.
Okay. Some good news for you:
1) Most babies with fetal alcohol syndrome (from drinking) have been exposed to alchohol in high amounts throughout their entire incubation. This doesn't sound like the case. There are a few cases in which high doses of alcohol have caused damage, but it does not sound like you've had that much to drink.
2) In terms of vitamins and nutrition, generally the baby will take what it needs from you and will leave you high and dry while it does fine.
Some bad news for you:
1) Like I said, the baby typically takes what it needs nutritionally and leaves you high and dry. If you've not been taking extra vitamins then you could be in trouble yourself (but your baby probably is fine). I'd go get a FULL lab panel now and figure out if you're low and start supplementing any deficiencies now.. rather than wait until after baby girl is born. Earlier is better than later when it comes deficiencies.
2) Ketones are produced when our bodies burn high amounts of fat rather than carbohydrates and typically during the first year of RNY WLS. Ketosis can be similar to fetal alcohol syndrome as ketones are like alcohol in makeup. If your diet contained some carbohydrates as well as protein, then I wouldn't be overly concerned about this. But it's something to be aware of for down the road.
If you need help on knowing what labs to ask for, etc. lemme know. I've been in deficiency hell post two babies and I hate to see anyone else fall into that hole. And congrats on your baby -- despite how it happened!

wow!!! it does sound crazy lol.... i guess for me the biggest thing to wrap my head around is not feeling the baby swimming around in there... gosh with my son i remember having the remote on my tummy and him kicking it off.... guess all of the weird feelings are starting to make sense now.... im sure you are pretty freaked out... definatly get to the ob so they can run some tests... i dont think you have to worry about the drinking too much... the smoking is definatly not good but hey there were times when seeing someone pregnant and smoking was socially acceptable... YOU on the other hand is what i would be worried about... get those labs checked and see if you have any defficencys NOW... you want to make sure you are in the best shape and ready for baby! pull out the name book and start hitting up freinds and craigs list so you can get the basics to bring baby home... maybe instead of a baby shower shower some one can throw you a welcome home baby shower (unless someone is talented enough to pull off a baby shower real quick) REGISTER NOW!!!
