Please tell me about hormonal issues and miscarriages.....
I have a beautiful little girl, Bella, who will be 2 on New Year's Eve. My husband and I want to give her a little brother or sister. We got pregnant over the summer, but miscarried in July (was told it was a blighted ovum). Anyway, we continued to try and I got a positive HPT last week. I had my HCG levels checked last Thursday and they looked great, over 7000 at around 5 weeks. I went back today and they had dropped to around 4000. So, here I am yet again looking at another loss. I'm not nearly as upset this time because I never got my hopes up after going thru our ordeal over the summer (plus, like last time, my symptoms just disappeared within a few days of getting the BFP). My doctor wants to see me on Wednesday and said he plans to do some bloodwork to see if there may be some hormonal/thyroid/etc issues. He doesn't seem to think I need to be worried.
Can anybody shed some light on types of hormonal issues that could cause this? I see many of you speak of Progesterone. Could that be a possibility? It seems we don't have a problem getting pregnant, I just have a problem keeping the baby. Any other possibilities? I'm trying to do as much research as I can before meeting with my doctor. Thank you all so much!

First, I am sorry for your loss.
I wanted to say you have had a child so that is the first hurdle is you know you can get pregnant. Are you seeing an OB, high risk OB, or RE? When they were checking your HCG, did they also check your progesterone levels?
I didn't realize how common miscarriages were until I actually had two. The doctor said that 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage. My RE says it is just that something isn't growing properly and it gets to the furthest part it can, then stops. IT SUCKS!!!
I am on progesterone until around 10 1/2 weeks. Progesterone plays a critical role in maintaining the early weeks of a pregnancy. At approximately the eighth week of a normal pregnancy, the placenta takes over the role of producing Progesterone for the remainder of the pregnancy. Progesterone helps relax the muscles in the lining of the uterus. So, that could be something to look into. My RE prescribes for every patient two days post ovulation. Then, he says he recommends continuing until OB decides to stop. He said sometimes around 10 1/2 weeks.
I would say that if you think your OB will run all the tests, great. The other option is to see an RE. They are on OB/GYN that specializes in just getting you pregnant. Also, with any of your miscarriages/blighted ovum, did you get a D&C? If you did, they should test to see what the reason was. My RE doesn't recommend a D&C for the first miscarriage, but if I would have had a second loss around 7 weeks or later, he would have wanted to test the fetus to see if there were any signs of clotting disorders and what was the reason for the loss.
You are in my thoughts! I hope you get some answers!

I had a loss in February so when I got pregnant again I went right to a Reproductive Endocrinologist. He put me on Progesterone supplements right away and monitored me with Ultrasounds and blood tests for the first 12 weeks.
I can't really say if what he did was what maintained this pregnancy or if it would have been successful anway but I sure appreciated the peace of mind it gave me and here I sit at 21 weeks pregnant now.
An RE is really the best one to help you get to the root of the problem.
Good luck.
