Breastfeeding Question

OK, quick question re: breastfeeding.

Depsite a valiant effort (a strong desire to breastfeed, hiring lactation consultants, taking medication and herbal supplements, pumping, etc.) I was not able to successfully breastfeed little Joseph beyond the 5 week mark. And even then, he was only getting a couple of ounces (at best) each day. The lactation consulatant feels my breasts lack the glandular tissue needed to produce enough milk. I was do disappointed in my body that I honestly was an absolute wreck for about a week straight once I stopped breastfeeding. Not being able to breastfeed was MORE devastating to me than the struggles we went through to get pregnant in the first place.

Now, here's my question...I have not breastfed or pumped since Friday, December 4th. Yet, my breasts are still leaking a nearly clear fluid and are still enlarged. They are not engorged or hard, though. Is this normal? How long does the process of drying up take?

Any insight would be appreciated!

Hi Paula

I understand how you're feeling... I had every intention to BF as well and it didn't work out...

But to answer your question it takes a while for everything to dry up completely... I leaked for quite a while with the clear fluidy stuff ( I want to say it was almost 6 months that I did this although not constantly)... Get a head of cabbage (it took me 2-3 heads), tear off a leaf of it and put it inside your bra & against your chest... Don't know why but this does work in easing the drying up process... I also had to take a pain reliever to help out with ache & soreness...

If you are not engorged or not having the hardness/full issue, you may not need the cabbage deal at all... It worked for me though when I did have that issue...

Goodluck to you... Joseph is such a cutie pie!!

I hate that it didn't work out for you. I can't offer any advice as far as drying up because I'm currently struggling to continue BFing myself... and trust me when I say I'm struggling. I pump, I nurse, I took Reglan, I'm taking Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle together (which I think the Blessed Thistle is increasing my supply somewhat but nowhere near what I'd like it to be. And since I have my band I can't take the pills like I'd like to so I have to open them and mix 4 of each supplement with a little water and try to chug the nasty concoction in one swig... YUCK!) At one point I wanted to cry because I'd like to feed her nothing but BM. I did end up compromising because her demand is more than my supply will satisfy so I supplement with formula... as long as she's eating is now my motto. I'm going to struggle on until she's around 4 or 5 months and starting some food so I guess I have another 1-2 months of this at least. I know how frustrating it can be. What meds did you try? In my research I ran across an X-rated clip (don't ask lol) of this lactating woman who clearly had not just had a baby so how was she producing milk? I'm at the point now where I want to order this med, Domperidone or something like that, from New Zealand. I don't care as long as it'll help. Like I said, I'm sorry it didn't work out for you... but as long as he's eating, right?

Paula,
Sorry for the struggles but I know you did all you kid and gave it a strong effort which some would not have done. It makes you no less of a good Mommy. As for your question, I BF Emad for one year, so through October 2008 roughly, and every now and then I will still have some clear discharge, sort of like when your milk/colustrum first comes in. I think part of it has to do with your cycle and the hormones in your body. I may be different so curious to see what other replies are.

I'm sooo sorry to hear about your struggle.  I had a similar situation with my daughter.  I tried and tried and finally gave up completely after about 8 weeks.  With her I was pretty much dried up within a month or so.  However, with my second baby I breastfed him for 8 months with no problems.  It took close to 6 months to dry up.  Obviously, it became less and less each day but, I still had milk till about 6 months after I stopped.
Don't be disappointed about not being able to continue.  I think breastmilk is one of the greatest gifts you can give your baby.  It's wonderful that you were able/willing to provide that to him even if it's just for a short time he will reap the benefits of your gift.
For your sake I hope you dry up soon!
