I'm READY!

I’m about a month away from being 1 year out and I’m really anxious to try for a baby.  2 months ago I had my hormone levels tested again and it showed I still have PCOS (Poly-cystic Ovarian Syndrome) so I’m back on Metformin.  I’ve been really hungry since I’ve started taking it again and I actually gained 10 lbs in the short span of 2 weeks.  I don’t know if it’s in my head or what, nothing else has changed in my lifestyle.  Anyway, does anyone know of any good websites to use for post-bypassers that are thinking about pregnancy?  I’ll be 30 in September, my boyfriend and I have discussed that we are ready to start trying.  We’re not telling anyone in our families just yet until it actually happens because the chances of me getting pregnant are slim w/ PCOS.  I should have already had like 849 kids by now!  I don’t want to wait very much longer due to my age and our relationship is solid so before I get down to making doctor appointments w/ my OB/GYN and my surgeon I just would like to hear your stories and what you think.  Is a year out too soon to try w/ PCOS (I know I will talk to my surgeon about this but your experiences)?  Thanks  a million!  Sooner

well first of all this is a great site for TTC (trying to conceive) post op.

A lot of us have or have had PCOS. I was told I would never be able to conceive pre op and well here I am almost 18 weeks pregnant!

As far as the timing. Are you close to goal? Is your weight stable? I would make appts with your OB and your surgeon (which should happen at 1 year out anyway) just to get the OK. Have them draw all of your labs and check your vitamin levels as well as everything else.

Best of luck!

Liz

PS - I'll be 30 in June - we have plenty of time to have babies!

I think it's great your TTC...  even though your still early out it could take a while like you figure... I believe I had the PCOS and I was 400 lbs when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter in July of 2007... I was almost 4 months out of surgery when I found out I was pregnant again and I was 412 and I was only getting a period every other month after surgery. I told my BF he was crazy thinking I was pregnant this time and I took 2 test both positive. It's amazing how things happen, especially sense I ended up with twins this time... I wish you the best and everyone on here is so helpful... take care... :)

A repost from earlier:

Please wait.

While this far out, you aren't likely to be producing dangerous ketones, your body is still undergoing a massive change that is putting it under massive amounts of stress.  The massive amount of weight loss has stressed your liver (which would be reflected by abnormal Liver Function Tests -- LFTs), possibly your kidneys, and your pancreas.

I've had two children post-op.  My first child was conceived at 13 months post-op.  In the world of WLS, that was my hardest pregnancy -- I could not keep my blood sugars stabilized at all, they kept dropping every five minutes regardless of how much I ate or WHAT I ate.  We tried a massive protein diet, a massive carb diet, I tried eating every 5 minutes, tried eating pure sugar, etc.  I was miserable.

Additionally, my iron tanked, my b-12 went into the low 200's, and I had no energy.  The massive weight loss had wrecked my body and I hadn't given it time to heal before taking even more from it by giving energy to a new life.

My 2nd pregnancy was much easier, and much more stable.  I am convinced it was because my body was healthier than it was the first time around.  I suffer from chronic pain, and still did, but my sugars were stable and my b-12 and iron never dipped as low.

Keep in mind that no matter how bad off your body is, your body will feed the baby and leave you high and dry.

For your own health, please wait.  This will be the best thing for both of you as you will have to be there for the baby AFTER the baby is born.
