maternity leave question

Alright so my company doesn't have a policy in place. My boss and I are going to discuss his offer after the holidays. I think that he is going to give me 6-8 weeks paid. I want to keep every second of it I can for after the baby comes so my plan is to wor****il I deliver. That being said - am I crazy? lol I am due 5/21 with my first baby. I am considering proposing to him that I go on 1/2 days the week before (5/21 is a friday so I would start 1/2 days that monday). Those of you that have been there done that - does this sound reasonable that I can still expect to be working then?I primarily have a desk job and by that point will make sure that is all that I am doing.

It;s reasonable unless you run into complications. I worked until delivery with my first 3. With Jantzen, I ended up being put on bed rest and being hospitalized 2 weeks prior to my actual delivery. But I had intended on working until going into labor.

You can't plan for unexpected things to happen, but with a healthy, trouble free pregnancy, it's completely doable.

with jordan I stopped working a few weeks early and regret every moment of it. he was 4 days late.

with kaida I had a scheduled csection and worked up until 2 days before it (it was a saturday).  I had a stand on my feet for 8 hours job too.

I think its very feasible to work til the day before you go even.

I worked 2 jobs right up until the day before Sadie was born.   I had planned on working one more week even but well she had different ideas.   I was working a 40 hr a week job plus one that was anywhere from 10-20 hrs a week in the evenings.   Both of these were desk jobs mostly.   I just wanted to save as much time as I could for after she was born.  I think as long as he's willing to let you do mostly desk work you'd be ok to work til delivery.   Of course things pop up that are out of our control but hopefully everything goes smoothly for you.

Cooper was due June 6th (By one doc) and June 10th by another.....he wasn't born until June 16th. 

The point is - you don't know when your baby will be born.  A due date is just an estimate.  It can be up to 2 weeks in either direction. 

June 10th came and went.... I was soooo not mentally into work, but I didn't want to waste my 8 weeks or my vacation time.  (We got 8 weeks "short term disability" as maternity and I could use my 6 weeks vacation too - but I had used some already and wanted to save some.) 

On June 12th I took off work (Told my boss I was contracting slightly - which I wasn't really.)  I went garage saleing --- walked about 2 miles and found an awesome baby swing! 

It wasn't until Monday the 15th I went into labor.....I had that day off for an ultrasound since I was 5 days past my due date. 

Had Cooper come on either of his expected dates I would have worked up until that time (I have a desk job), but he didn't......

Maybe you can sweet talk your boss into an extra week of vacation ?  And use it prior to "maternity" leave!  :-)

And afterwards - since it seems you have a small office - sweet talk him into letting you bring the baby with you to work! heh heh.

One of my customers brought her son to work with her until he was 4 months old and too restless to be in the office all day. I thought it was awesome her boss let her do that ! 

It'll all work out in the end!

I plan on working up until delivery. I also have a desk job. It is definitely getting very uncomfortable tho! Sitting here all day in this desk chair kills my hips and I am getting sick quite often and having to run to the bathroom (and I don't mean throwing up!) which is not fun! Im going to tough it out though so I can use all of my time off when the baby is here!

When I had my first, I was 365 lbs. So, carrying my darling little one was hard work... that being said, I worked a primarily desk job as well, and I was there until the decided to induce me a few days befroe my due date. I was tired, but otherwise in good condition! It can be done!

I did exactly what your thinking. I worked half days the last week up until Friday and I was due on Sunday. It's hard to tell now for the last month because it's very tiring and you may have swelling like I did with sitting at my desk too long (thats the reason I went to half days). Besides that I needed to go home and rest before getting Ny at daycare. Obviously you dont have that so I would say work as long as you are comfortable or your doctor advises otherwise.

My boss at the time was a complete ASS even though his wife had given birth twice.  He seemed put out that I was asking to work 1/2 days until I delivered.   Now mind you I was working full time and going to school full time, but he was still an ASS.  Luckly I only worked 3 (1/2) days before Caleb was born.

I had only 2 weeks vacation time, but the President of the company said he would take care of me considering I had worked for him at the time 10 years.  He did not follow through with his promise.  I was only paid for 4 weeks.  I have a desk job as well.  I wanted to work full time until Caleb came, but I just do it.

I would suggest that you plan out with your boss your "plan" and get it all in writting and be open to him that the baby has his/her own time frame, but you will do what needs to be done to make sure both parties are satisfied.
