gestational diabetes...questions....help
i am 32 weeks pregnant and have a bunch of problems with my pregnancy. i am interested in any feedback with the gestational diabetes...
my first pregnancy i tested negative for GD.
my second pregnancy i failed the test and had to do the 3 hour one and it came back negative.
this pregnancy i tested around week 27 and failed so i did the three hour and it came back negative.
around week 30/31 i went in for my weekly check and they always test my urine and this time there was a large amount of sugar showing up in the urine. so my doctor had me do the 3 hour test again and it came back positive.
i have been checking my blood sugar levels for 5 days now and went in yesterday to get ultrasound and meet with the doctor. the baby at 32 weeks is already 6 pounds and the technician was like WOW...your baby has a huge wide head and her stomache is wide with fat rolls.(so of coarse i am worried cause she made it sound freakish).
then i saw the doctor and apparently my levels after a modified diet were still too high. he put me on glyburide 2x daily and i will go back on thursday to see if its working. of coarse i went and googled the medicine and i landed on all these websites where its a category C and not safe during pregnancy. my doctor explained that the baby is large on the outside but the insides (lungs) can be underdeveloped with diabetes. i know gestational diabetes can happen to a number of women during pregnancy...but anyone i knew who had it was able to control it with their diet. my doctor was most concerned because my highest level everyday was when i wake up in the morning and check after a fast. theres nothing to be modified...and food has nothing to do with it. i am curious if there are any women out there who are in the same situation or know of anyone who took the glyburide and baby was fine? i am just letting my nerves get to me. it doesnt help my sister in laws close friend who had diabetes during pregnancy found out week 32 her baby was gonna be born with out an eye...i know thats an extreme and rare case but you know how we let our nerves get to us.any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Tricia, (hugs) so sorry you are going thru this. First off regarding the ultrasound tech: She should NEVER had said that to you! VERY unprofessional. I am sure the baby will be fine and chubby and cute. I personally never had GD, but had to do the 3 hour with 2 of my pregnancies. I have a friend who was on some kind of Rx for GD similiar to you (I dont know the name of the Rx sorry.) But her baby was born by C-section at just over 37 weeks (because the OB thought the baby was so huge (they told her he was going to be over 10 pounds at that point based on the ultrasound) He was 8lbs 7oz and her smallest of her 3 boys. He was chubby and adorable. He did have to go to the NICU for 36 hours due to some issues with his sugar and bilirubin and minor breathing, but they came home together on day 4.
So I hope that you also have a happy birth with your LO and that this will help ease your nerves a little. It is amazing how from conception as a mother worrying starts!! It is our nature to protect our LO's and I am sure you will do what you can. I will be praying for you!

I'm technically Type 2 diabetic before getting pregnant. I saw "technically" because it's been virtually non-existent since I lost weight with Lapband.
Of course, when I got pregnant, I started monitoring again. I also have a tendency to be high in the morning. They call it the "dawn phenomenon". My OB's explanation was that my sugar was getting too low during the night and then overcompensating by going too high. Her suggestion was to have a snack right before bed with some protein and carb like a cracker with peanut butter or have some cheese in the middle of the night. You might want to give that a try.
How high is it when you check first thing in the morning?
Oh and I took Glyburide when I was first diagnosed, long before I was pregnant. As I lost weight I had to stop taking it because my blood sugar was getting too low. I'm surprised the doctor didn't just put you on Insulin...interesting.
