Irregular periods & obesity...?
I've heard from a few doctors & my Mom that being obese can make your periods irregular. I've always had regular periods, but since August- they've been really irregular. Almost non-existent. I'm only 22 & I'm nowhere near being ready for children right now- but is it a possibility that me weight is whats making my periods irregular (I weigh about 380)? If so, after I take off the weight- will I get back to normal? And most importantly- will I be able to have children?..I've never been diagnosed with any other conditions except a few minor cysts on my ovaries. Should I visit my gyno & discuss this stuff with him?
Hey, i was in the same boat as you. I had cysts on my ovaries and had to get one removed at the age of 21. So it only left me with one ovary.
I 350 I lost 10% of my weight and get prego with my first son.
You should visit your ob and talk to them about. but if there any thing like mine they will blame the weight.
Good luck

I had my RNY 3 weeks after I turned 20. Before that I weighed 363lbs and did not get my periods regular at all. Was told I would never get pregnant. I am now also 22, married and pregnant with a girl. Once you lose weight your entire body chemistry will change, and more than likely your period will become more regular. Good luck

My periods have always been irregular, unless I was on birth control pills. When I wasn't on pills, my periods were completely out of whack. I'd go for months and not get it. I figured it was the weight.
I got down to about 250 pounds on Weigh****chers and they were still irregular. So I went to have an ultrasound and I was diagnosed with a 5-inch-long dermoid cyst on one of my ovaries in 2003. Had to have an ovary removed.
I was so freaked I'd never have a kid. Got married at age 35 and got pregnant 2 months after I quit my birth control. Had a perfect kid, although I had to have a C-section (370 at birth; dropped to 340 afterwards and started gaining afterwards).
I went off birth control because I thought it was contributing to my weight gain (and it made me crazy). My periods were all out whack still. I'd take pregnancy tests every once in a while just to make sure that our protection was working. (THAT I'M SURE WAS THE WEIGHT.)
I got an IUD about 3 months before my surgery just because we don't want to get preggers again until I'm at goal.
My period came back the day before my surgery (I think the preop liquid diet triggered it). They're wierd now, but I think it's the IUD. I do get bloated every month -- just not much if anything comes out.
I recommend you talk to your gyno. I'm not sure how much of my issues were related to the dermoid cyst. But I think they overlook them in SMO women very easily because they do blame the weight.

One food makes you larger, and one food makes you small...
I have had irregular periods my entire life... after WLS surgery I am regular. I used to get my period like 2 to 4 times a year only. Now I get it every month and I can pretty much predict it now and i know when it's coming. I was with my ex for 7 years and never used birth control. I weighed almost 300 pounds and never got pregnant. I lost the weight and got pregnant right after I went off of birth control- had no problem. I think our entire bodies change when we lose weight.
