TMI sorry.....I am 11 weeks pg and having terrible issues with constipation again.  With DS it didn't start to get this bad so early.  I am working on getting the more fiber in and more water but so far I haven't had any success.  How much fiber should I try to get in?   Do any of you know if I can take a stool softener daily?  If so are there any kinds that are not okay?  I thought I might try prune juice too.  Is that safe?  How effective is it?  Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I can't remember who suggested it to me but I drink diluted apple juice and that seems to do the trick for me so far.  I also eat a bowl of oatmeal the instant kind, or I eat cheerios, like to snack on crunchy things.  I have the prune juice waiting in the fridge, but I am a chicken....LOL

OMG, I so know where you are coming from.  I would cry because I was so constipated and didnt know what I was going to do.  I finally called my doctor after trying benefiber, apple juice, and prune juice and she told me I can take peri-colace and that would be fine.  I take it every night and every day around noon I go.  Perfect.  I dont know what I would do without it.

I Hope you get relief cause it sucks big time.

A stool softener WITHOUT laxative is safe.  You don't want a laxative.

Try bumping your fluids up to 96oz to see if this helps as well.

Ugh, that is the worst! I was constipated my entire PG, then was on Zofran, which causes constipation. Needless to say, I was miserable. I tried every OTC remedy with Dr approval (peri Colace, Miralax, Benefiber, Dulcolax, Fleet Glycerin suppositories, even an enema administered in the hospital - talk about humbling). I tried pistachios, prunes, juice, bran, applesauce, warm baths, ho****er bottles, fluids etc. Definitely try some of the above if it's all right with your OB. In the end, SF Twizzlers were the only thing that helped. The sugar alcohols made me dump, and that's what it took to move things along. My OB was fine with it and admittedly it was the best tasting of all the remedies I tried.

Good luck!

I completely empathize.  This is a problem I deal with on a regular basis and pregnancy just makes it worse.  This works for me:  I take one 100 mg docusate sodium stool softener every day.  Then I take Miralax 2-3 times per week.  I mix it with Trop 50 orange juice, and it's not bad at all.  It just makes the juice a little thicker, but completely drinkable.  If I'm traveling, I also add a 50 mg docusate sodium w/ senna concentrate laxative because it seems to get even worse when I'm away from home.   I don't know if you're a coffee/tea drinker but my mom swears that drinking hot drinks helps move things along.  From experience, I tend to agree with her.

Hope some of this helps.  It really is an evil issue to have...Natalie

Thank you for all the ideas.  I am probably going to try all of them till something works.  I have a doctor appt toward the end of the month and was going to bring it up then but I may have to give them a call in the next few days if I continue to feel so bad.
