NuvaRing Birth Control
Hello Ladies,
Okay, I'll admit it; I'm pretty much a daily lurker here. Interestingly enough, though, my husband and I have decided that we're still not quite ready for a baby. Mixed feelings about this (sad, relieved, etc.)...but I know that waiting a little longer, even if it's just another 6 months or a year is probably best. We've got a lot on our plate right now, and bringing a little one into it might not be very fair on our part.
So with that in mind, we decided that just using condoms and/or foam wasn't the best choice anymore. Maybe something with a little bit higher rate of effectiveness and with a little less thought involved would be nice. I got a prescription for the NuvaRing from my OBGYN. Anyone used this successfully? My big question, though: my doctor says it isn't as effective the first month (even if inserted the first day of your cycle as indicated on the official packaging instructions). The official packaging instructions says it's effective from day one if inserted on the first day of your cycle...my question: who's right? Part of me feels like the doctor is just trying to cover his butt, but another part of me wonders is there something to this. Granted, we're being extra careful this first month to be sure, but curious minds wonder, you know?
But otherwise, I like it so far...no spotting (yet - that's why I didn't just go back to the pill - I spotted like all the time on it). Can't feel it. Husband claims he can't feel it. Isn't causing any funky vaginal issues. So hopefully this will work out - it's a whooping $50 a month with pretty good insurance, but that's still cheaper than a baby, right?
Congrats to all the mommies and mommies-to-be. Good luck and baby dust to the TTCers.
Cheers!
~Katherine
Well I was on Nuvaring a few years ago, and for me it was not a good choice. But pills aren't either so, I'm stuck! It was great for contraceptive but I have many hormonal issues (unrelated to BC or WLS) and become a monster when taking anything like that. I always waited one week for any type of birth control to go without a back up.
Hi Katherine,
When I was on it I loved it! never any problems at all. I only paid 11 bucks a month for it though. 50 sounds like alot to me. But I was on it 4 years ago. I took it out and bam, got pregnant within 2 weeks of taking it out. After I had my daughter I had an IUD put in. I like it too, but had it taken out to have a baby. Like the other poster said, NO birthcontrol pills. They aren't absorbed right and you could get pregnant.
take care,
Bambi

I got pregnant on it. Since I don't absorb right, I couldn't go on pills after having my son, so they put me back on it... it did not stop my post-birth bleeding.
My advice.... use condoms too... if you really don't want to get pregnant. Otherwise consider something like the shot, patch, or implanon. Keep in mind most of those can cause weight gain in normal people.... I don't know about us.
good luck figuring it all out.

I tried the ring; but wasn't the choice for me. On it for about two months. I can't really say if it worked effectively in the sense I wasn't having a period at all, but I didn't get preggo those two months either. My issue discomfort; when hubby and I had sex, it always had to come out, or it would on it's own...which was kinda a mood swinger...good luck! Stacey

I loved it....and for some people they took the ring out and put another one in to avoid a period...some docs say that is okay....I took the week break and my periods were light....I would be cautious the first month and during sex it came out a few times too....DH said he could feel it too...but was no biggie....mine is cheaper than $50 too but yes it is cheaper than a baby.... :)
Good luck....
