Ive been reading anything and everything i can get my hands on in regards to pregnancy, i have also joined several "mommy to be" on-line forums and have seen a trending topic on other sites pertaining to Ultrasounds and more so the LACK of them.
It seems that it is common practice to only have ONE ultrasound covered by insurance, unless "medical need" can be given by the OB.
I have my first OB appt this coming Monday and had just assumed (i know u should never assume anything, right?!) that i would be having an ultrasound, if anything confirm fetal age and check for a heartbeat.
I haven't really seen this issue touched on this board and I'm wondering if its just because most of you have been lucky enough to have early ultrasounds.
Also, do you think that your having had weight loss surgery impacted your OB's decision to schedule an early ultrasound?!
Ill be calling my OB's office tomorrow to ask if i will be given one or not, really hoping i can have one!
Also don't think there is any reason for DF to go along for the appt if there wont be one (i know that's all he really wants to see lol)

thanks in advance!!

I've stated and posted the research links as well to my reasons why I do not have early ultrasounds done. They are too risky to me and I prefer having only one u/s done towards the middle of the pregnancy. Dating is pointless because babies come when they are ready. I've never had a baby born with a date stmped on them saying they were to be born on their given birthday.

My 2¢ take it or leave it.

My OB's office as standard practice does an Ultrasound around 20 weeks and then again near the end to check positioning. I have been considered high risk since day 1 so I had my first US at 8 weeks and then starting at 10 weeks I saw the High Risk Dr @ maternal and fetal medicine for an ultrasound once a month.

Here's to a happy and healthy 9 months!

I had one at 8 weeks cause I was spotting my whole 1st trimester.  But the normally scheduled ones for me was 12 weeks to check for downs and then I'm going to one at 20 weeks.  I'm not sure if I will get anymore after that.  I'm almost at 19 weeks.    my wls really hasnt impacted my OB except making sure I'm eating enough and that i'm taking enough vitamins.

I have military insurance I had an u/s at 6, 8, 12, and 20 weeks. Now I do NST's twice a week and u/s once a week to check her afi. It just depends on your insurance and doctor's office. They should do one to check the baby's age. Good Luck at your appt. I hope you get your u/s!! They are the best!!!

I had my first u/s at 8 weeks to check age & for multiples. Then I had a growth scan level 2 u/s at 20 weeks. Then I had another level 2 u/s at 32 weeks to check growth. From then on I have had a bio physical profile u/s weekly to ensure baby is continuing to do well. They threw in another level 2 growth scan last week and I have my last one at 40 weeks. I have had soooo many u/s its crazy! I believe my OB has made me do so many due to getting pregnant very early post op. I'm pretty curtain that you will get an u/s around 20 weeks to check growth, fluid, sex, etc... to ensure baby is growing and progressing as it should.

thanks ladies!
well it looks like i WILL be having an ultrasound at my first OB appointment, however bad news is ill be waiting quite a bit longer then planned.
I was scheduled to have my first OB appt this Monday, got a call that doc needed to reschedule due to "unforeseen changes to her schedule" !
Hard part is the soonest day to reschedule is dec 31st   =(    ill almost be 11 weeks by then!                 Well everything happens for a reason right?!?  trying to stay positive =)

Too bad about having to reschedule.  The upside of that is that your ultrasound at 11wks will look so much better than at where you are now.  I had an ultrasound at 5wks, 4 days b/c of cramping, one at 7wks to check for viability(the heartbeat), one at 9 weeks that was the regularly scheduled one, one at 13wks, one at 17wks, and now one coming up at 20wks, 3 days.  I have to admit the baby looked way more like a baby at the 13wk mark.  And googling u/s pics, once it hits that 11wk mark, it won't just look like a big peanut.  Be happy...you will see a baby!!!!!

And besides...Dec 31 is kind of cool.  It will be the end of one year and the beginning of new year...and new start in your life.  I think thats really cool!!!!!

Because of my RNY surgery only being this past feb.  my ob decided that it is important for her to see my lil puffin. and that its medically ness. so...with that being said, I have had 3 ultrasounds.  I got to hear the heartbeat via ultra sound at 8 weeks...its was the most beautiful sound i have ever heard!!!  I would just educated my ob if i were you and express to her how important you feel it is for more than one ultrasound due to your lack of absorption.
