I confirmed today that I am pregnant... I am only 6 months post op RNY and I am scared... I am only 4 weeks out and have an appointment Thursday to see the RN. I am also worried my surgeon is going to be mad at me... That is so juvenile I know but I really am fearful about telling him. Did anyone else go through this? I feel so stupid for getting pregnant and at the same time I want to be really happy because I had the surgery (in part) because I was unable to conceive and wanted a baby so bad. I have read that 1 in 5 confirmed pregnancies will end in miscarriage. Is that higher post RNY? Ho has your weight fluctuated during pregnancy? OMG… I am freaking out. Also I have 2 ways I want to tell my man. First he is a big Raider fan and I was thinking about giving him a baby jersey fro Christmas (well earlier I imagine) or dressing the dogs up in “I’m a big sister" shirts. This will be our first baby. What do you guys think? How did you tell your man?

First off Congratulations :)  Second...take a deep breath...it is all going to be okay.  I do not know of any statistics out there of increased chance of miscarriage due to RNY.  Someone else who is more versed on this board may know more than me.  All I know from reading these boards all the time is they tell you to increase your carbs to avoid going into ketosis, as that could be dangerous for baby.  Get with your OB and your surgeon.  As far as being nervous about telling your surgeon...I can understand...but you cannot undo this, and it is a blessing, not a mistake :)  So take your vitamins religiuosly...add in some carbs...and get appointments with your docs for further instructions :)

As far as telling your partner...I like the dogs with the shirts idea :)

Congrats and I hope you have a happyy and healthy 9 months.  It will go so fast it will be over before you know it :)

I was 5.5 mos out when I got pg and still 35 lbs from goal.  Pg has gone great... I am currently 36.5 weeks.  My surgeon was concerned but all is well.  I will say I have gained 30 lbs.....  Not everyone does but my dr was happy I was gaining... it showed the baby was getting what she needed... good luck

When you see your nurse / doctor, remind them that preggos will drop the following very quickly:

b-12, iron, vitamin D, folate

Ask for the following tests every 8 weeks minimum to verify your health:

hct, hgb, ferritin, blood serium iron, b-12, folate, thiamin (if puking alot), and 0,25(OH)D

(blood, brain, and bone health)

Also, if you are in ketosis right now, be sure you up your fluids to at LEAST 64fl oz, if not much, much more, and get in at least 100g of carbs.  This will kick you out of ketosis, and if you are still producing ketones, will dilute them to help protect your baby.  Also, ideally, you'll want 90g of protein a day, but this is REALLY hard, especially in the 1st trimester due to food intolerances and aversions.

Good luck, and if you need any help, let me know.

first off congrats..ha i had the same fears mostly with my surgeon..to my suprise i had my 6 month post op and ob appt same day and building..lol OB was a little worried because i was 5-6 months post op only due to the unknown..when i walked down the hall to surgeon..walked in and got weighed..i was down 80 lbs in 6mos and he asked how ive been and i said pregnant..he smiled and said all will be fine just eat small meals and lots of protien..food wise it was a little harder but the small meals worked..i was very suprised with his reaction...he said the first six months i had no complications and lab work was perfect. funny how we act little kids about that..than at 8wks US another suprise TWINS..

I did onlygain 8 lbs in my 8 month..in the beginning of preg i lost about 25-30 lbsmore but maintained after..I did eat all the time...like very two hrs..and drank about 100-120 oz of water a day..didnt have probs besides cholestatis at 30 wks and was sched for c-sec at 36wks but my water broke at 34 wks..they were in nicu for 7 days to gain weight now at 15 months they are running and climbing everywhere...

Sorry so long..CONGRATS again..love the idea for telling daddy (raider fan here ;)

I found out that I was pregnant at 5 months post op of RNY.  With my history of diabetes I was put into a special nutrition program and I saw a nutritionist every other week.  They worked with me on increasing my carbs and watched my vitamin levels religiously.  I had a very healthy baby boy at 37 weeks who weighed 7 lbs 3 oz.  He is now 19 months old and a pleasure.  I was scared to tell my surgeon and ended up not telling him until after the birth of my baby.  Of course I felt that I was taking all the precautions that I needed to with the nutritionist and the vitamin levels and since they knew all about the surgery and were watching me for all the issues I felt confident without seeing him.

I lost 11 pounds during the first trimester.  I gained 24 pounds after that.  After the birth of the baby I was down below my start weight when I had conceived.  I ended up down 35 pounds within a few months of delivery.
