I think that growing pains are real, because your son says it hurts, so I imagine it does. I had a little brother years younger than I was and I remember he had really bad pains starting really young when he was growing.
As for Christmas, I think it is more important to keep the number about the same, especially since your daughter is so young and really doesn't need much. This year we are spending much less than usual, but I shop clearance and sales starting in the summer. We also decided no sibling gifts with my own siblings, and to just buy for the kids. This is the last year that my daughter will be the only child, so I am sure we will have the same issue. Good luck!
