Has anyone used the program your baby can read???
My husband and I watched the informercial for this DVD program and if it works like the testimonials say, we definitely want to get it. I would like to hear from someone I know wasn't paid to say it worked and their child is a genius, etc.
Any information would be helpful.

We have our miracle: Jakob Makhi born 4-15-10; 4 lbs. 10 oz. 22" long.
I haven't but read the fine lines... it is wicked expensive. My friend does a work at home job and takes calls for all the informercials and she has warned me about all the small print. You will pay SEVERAL hundred dollars to get what they are showing you. I believe Ann G. found it on ebay for much cheaper.
Thanks, I will keep that in mind. They did say it was about $250. However, people are paying thousands of dollars for infant preschools to give the kids a head start, so I figure if it works it would be worth the extra cash.

Chavon,
I did not buy the program. I will tell you what we did with my daughter and hope this will save you lots of money. I bought a book about teaching my baby sign language. She was signing pretty much straight away. We also read and continue to read to her every day. She is 5 now and just started kindergarten this year. She is already reading chapter books and reads anything she can get her hands on. She started reading when she was 3 1/2 and we can't even spell around her anymore. Also once the little one is old enough to use the mouse on the computer there is a free website called starfall.com and it will work on reading skills as well.
Good Luck,
Amy

I think it's an overpriced product. Save your money and just get some basic flashcards for $5-$10 and do it that way.
Personally, I think plopping a child in front of a DVD may make a marginal difference. The child mind is a blank slate yes, but I think you are your child's best tool when it comes to learning.
This is not to say that there are not fantastic DVDs and TV shows out there because there are. I'm just saying not to fall victim to the dreaded infomercial products that in the long run will not really do squat except leave your wallet empty.

I know they have great testimonials but I went to a conference with a Neurological doctor who dealt with brain development in children. He stated that if you push a child to read before their brain is ready you can cause more harm than good. Reading is in part brain maturity, that is why every child starts to read at different times. He stated that the part of the brain that controls reading is located by the part the gives children the ability to skip. So if they can skip they are ready to learn to read. That being said I have always read to my child from day one. They have always read at least two grades ahead of their grade level. They have been early talkers and early readers. My daughter who is 7 now was skipping at two and my 5 year old was skipping at three. My oldest is 9 and he was the same way. He is now reading novels.

I second the opinion of the neurologist- Having taken a lot of developmental psychology both graduate and undergraduate, it is detrimental to expect a child to read early, and it has no real impact on later academic success. In fact, in the preschool/toddler years it is better for children to learn important social skills and emotional skills, such as empathy and sharing, than it is to force the academic side. Of course that is important, but it needs to be developmentally appropriate. Kids are bright and thye pick things up. Granted, they do need preschool and more structured learning after age 3, but they should not be reading. I don't believe that htose babies are actually reading on that infomercial- I think it is staged. Just my thoughts..

Thanks everyone for the advice. I was an early reader I was spelling and reading at 3 and my mom didn't have any dvd's. I just had older siblings who use to spell everything around me so I wouldn't know what they were saying so I taught myself how to figure that thing out.
Obviously, I wouldn't want to push my baby in front of a DVD instead of one on one teaching, but when kids are entranced by cartoons and motion on tv I figured that if it was educational it would feel better than some of the stuff I see on the tv now for kids which much of it I feel is totally inappropriate.
I will definitely weigh this a little more and see what happens. Thanks again. Still wish there were someone out there who actually used the product themselves to ask the questions about it directly.
