how DISGUSTING!

maybe i am blind...but i have never heard of this before....on one of the other message boards i am on for pregnancy...a woman wrote a post for whatever reason  and decided to check her own cervix to see if she was dialated?????? do woman actually do this themselves??????? that can be so harmful for the mom and baby...who would do that?

Yup I know someone who has. But how do you know what you are checking for? It's not disgusting and as long as your water has not broke, you and  your baby are safe. Not my cup of tea but I guess to each their own.....

HOW would one go about doing this??? LOL Sorry, but when I am VERY pregnant, I dont think I could even reach.  What was her reason for doing so??? Was her Dr. out of town??

Why is that disgusting to you? Women trying to concieve do this daily. I am going to assume you are very young.

Yep, I have heard of women on this board doing it.   Would I do it?  No    Is it disgusting?   I don't think so.  

I guess to each his own, and while some may be squeamish I would not be.  My doctor actually had a brochure that had information on this. I would liken it to women who check their cervical mucus for fertile periods in their cycle when trying to conceive. Granted I would probably not know what exactly I was checking for, but it is part of the body, my body, so I would do it if it was advised. I mean we use tampons, some people use diaphragms, and others Nuva Ring, same concept to me???

Yes, women that educate themselves on childbirth are capable.  When you are knowledgeable, you have the ability to assess yourself.  I have many friends who have had several children and know how to tell how far they are dilated and if effacement of the cervix is happening. 

I also have friends that have unassisted child birth.  That means they have their babies at home without a midwife or dr.  They do the checking, pushing , cord cutting, placenta delivery and so on.

Why do you think it is harmful to the mom and the baby?  A mother checking herself is no less or no more "harmful" than a dr doing it.

How have you been?

I'm doing OK.  We're in the middle of packing out - the movers are here right now loading boxes into the truck, furniture tomorrow - and then flying out on 12/20 en route to Bulgaria for our next (and God willing, final) stop on our world tour.  I don't mind the world tour part...it's the packing that's wearing me down.  My son was laughing at me the other day.  In my entire life, I have never lived in one house for more than 3 1/2 years.  I can't complain too much though...my son should graduate high school in Bulgaria, and he's got an education that very few children ever get - whether they're American or any other nationality.

How's things w/you?  I saw your post that you're ready to TTC again.  I hope it happens quick for you.  Hope is almost a year old now isn't she?
