How long after WLS did u get pregnant?
Hi ladies,
I am totally new to all of this and am currently persuring WLS. I just found out this week that my insurance will cover it.. yay!! Anyway, my DH and I are wanting to have #2 and I was wondering how long after WLS before you got pregnant and what form of BC did you use after WLS to prevent?
I have PCOS and we have never used any form of birthcontrol. I have a miracle 3 year old who was concieved a month after giving up on fertility treatments. I guess I'm worried about the surgery changing my body and pregnancy happening too early, but then I want it to happen as soon as it is healthy for my body. Thanks so much for your replys

It's best to wait at least 18-24 months post surgery, both for baby's health and your health. Lots of ladies have gotten pg earlier and gone on to have healthy kiddos, but it's something I wouldn't do on purpose. I used a Mirena IUD until I was 19 months post op, and got pg 28 months post op. No problems!
First of all you WILL need to use 2 forms of birth control post op as your fertility more then likely will sky rocket with the weight loss. My surgeon reccomended the pill and barrier method (like condoms) that being said I was also told to wait 18-24 months. I will be 3 years out in January and I am almost 16 weeks pregnant.
Good luck and congrats on insurance covering your surgery!

I used condoms because I didn't trust BC pills to be reliable. And the Depo had me bleeding for 5 months in a row. Discuss BC options with your surgeon and OB to address absorption issues so you are safe during the first 2 years.

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!
I was told to wait 18-24 mths. I actually had to sign a form at my WLS Dr's office stating that I would wait at least that long before we tried to concieve. Now I am due to have a baby boy in a few more weeks. Its safer for u and the baby to wait. Give your body time to heal and adjust.
In the beginning ( i had wls to have kids) my dr told me the norm was 12-18 months post op. He cleared me and my fiance to start trying around 10 months because i was maintaining great levels and had already hit a good bmi for me. (still a little higher, but i have a huge bone structure. ) my fiance had testicular cancer so we assumed it would take a while to become pregnant started seeing fertility specialist had the consult did the exam, before we could start any treatment we found out we were expecting!!!! So here I am tomorrow will be 10 months post op and expecting! I am 7 weeks and one day today.
I too have PCOS and went through 8 years of failed fertility treatments before my wls. I got pregnant the 1st time at 16 months post op (1st month ttc) & then again at 3.5 years post op (again 1st month ttc after IUD removal). You do want to make sure that you use adequate birth control as fertility rates jump for post op PCOSers and the pill is likely to not be as effective as you need it to be due to the malabsorption. Ideally you want to wait 18-24 months after surgery to not only maximize your weightloss but also to establish good eating habits. Many surgeons have lowered their pregnancy requirement to 12 months from 18-24. You really don't want to get prego too soon as going through ketosis (which you will do in the beginning) isn't ideal for pregnancy, plus add to that in the beginning you're lucky if you get in 300-500 calories a day.
Good luck and I hope you get surgey soon!

I initially got pregnant 7 months post op, but had a m/c. I am now 6-7 weeks preggers again (over a year post op). My doc said to wait AT LEAST a year. I used Nuva Ring for a while and it worked great (I wasn't using it when I got pg with the first baby). If you use somethin other than the pill like Nuva Ring or IUD, you don't have to use 2 forms of b/c.
Good luck with you surgery!

My Dr prefered 2 years post op.
I got preggo with #2 at 23 months post op and had a great pregnancy.
I am currently preggo with #3- got preggo at about 38 months post op.

Well I had VSG and they recommend 12-18 months post-op OR to have lost at least 80-100% of your excess weight.
I accidentally got pregnant last month. I was 7 mo post op. I had lost 66% of my EW at the time. I have since lost 5 more pounds since getting my BFP and continue to lose. I ham now down 68% of my EW. I am around 56 lbs away from my goal weight right now too.
My bariatric doctors aren't concerned at all unless I have severe vomiting/morning sickness. So far I have not had severe vomiting. I am nauseous a lot and eating is difficult but I choke the food down knowing I need to.
I called my bariatric doctor ASAP when I found out I was pregnant thinking there would be problems but really they weren't concerned at all. I figure if they aren't highly concerned I shouldn't be either.
I worry more about gaining too much weight while pregnant and losing the weight after I give birth and while I am nursing. So far I keep losing weight and my concern is that I am not eating enough and I won't gain any weight while pregnant and not have a "healthy" baby, weight wise.
