Feeding solids?

Everett will be 7 mos next week and he is not really into eating solids. He watches with fascination when any of us eat and drink. Yet, a few bites into his own eating and he loses interest. Even with the first few bites, he doesn't really open his mouth wide for the spoon. He doesn't spit out his food, but he just seems rather indifferent (NOT like when I eat). By the 5th bite or so, he starts whining and fussing like he's hungry but he clamps his mouth closed.

He's had rice cereal, sweet potatoes, pears, applesauce and beans so far, but I only give him solids during our dinner time.

It seems my other kids were eating with a lot more interest at this age, but that was quite a few years ago.

Ideas? Seem about right for his age? He doesn't have any teeth yet, would that make a difference (ie teething pain maybe?).

Thanks in advance!

Hugs,

Jo

Matthew isn't a fan of babyfood.  So I've been doing a modified version of babyled weaning with him.  He loves eating like that.  He just got his first 2 teeth a couple weeks ago and hasn't had any issues eating.  You may try that.  Have you tried gerber puffs, yogurt bites and the gerber lil crunchies?

I've never hear of the baby led weaning - but it sounds like a good idea.  At 6+ months, they can eat those puffs?    I'm always super-paranoid about choking.

Matthew went through a stage where he didn't want me to feed him he wanted to self feed.  So that is when I tried the puffs, yogurt bites and other finger foods.  He started eating those around 6 months.  Maybe your lo justs wants to feed himself.  You may try that!

My son and the little guy I do daycare for do not like baby food from the jar. I make my own and they would eat that!  Maybe try making some baby food. It's super easy!!

I didn't think about it being a dislike for the jarred food.  Didn't you have some recipes posted on your FB status recently?  I'll have to go back and look so I can try making my own.  Thanks!

Those were mostly snack ideas. But just google home made baby food. I use ice trays and freeze it once frozen I take them out and put in baggies and put back in the freezer. You then have your serving sizes!! Makes it sooooooooo easy!!! And if you are on the go they will unthaw in the baggie in your diaper bag and be ready for you! SOOOOO easy!!!

just give him what you eat.  if you have carrots, mash them for him.  if you have potatoes, give him some. if you have chicken, ma**** up for him.

see if that works for you.

My daughter never liked much in the way of baby food.  she had puffs and cherrios at 7 months and then pretty much held off on all of it til she was a year.

Jo - I know I've seen these special baby food processors - but I am considering making some of my own baby food when the time comes - do you have a mini food processor? Couldn't you just toss whatever you guys are eating (within reason of course) in there and make it a paste for him? Add a little broth or water to get it to the right consistency?

This might be one of those crazy "not a mom" yet questions - but who knows lol it might work!
