Ok Got a few Questions...(LONG)
Hello Everyone,
Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! Had my first pre-natal yesterday (if you can call it that), BP was 120/80 Weight....would rather not say although I have lost about 5lbs since finding out I am pregnant. They would like me to only gain about 20 so I am good so far...LOL
They sent me home with somethings to think about, so any advice would be great.
I am very early still 5Weeks 2days, had a blighted ovum last spring, so hoping that is not the case this time, wish there was an early test for that, but I guess I will have to be patient and keeping my fingers crossed BIG time.
Ok, On to my Questions.....
1) The doc asked about testing down the road....Down syndrome, etc because of my age (37now, will be 38 when this baby comes) and Ammnio.....I am scared to death right now for obvious reasons. Also we have no Downs in the family either side, although DH had a sister born way back when with Spina bifida (nural tube defect) So my Question would be TO Ammnio or NOT to Ammnio? I know it is a personal choice, but have any of you done it and what were your experiences? We are willing to accept anything that comes our way, would NOT terminate if that was to be the case, make sense?
2) CONSTIPATION
WTH is with that? What can I safely take to help me. Nothing seems to be working. Oatmeal worked lat time but not this time. Doc said stool softeners, but he is not familiar with RNY and I told him no Capsules, he mentioned metamucil, but again I am unsure. I am drinking 64 oz of fluid a day, no caffiene everything I drink is caffiene free tea, coffee, etc. I drink diluted fruit juice (cranberry, orange) sugar free Kool Aide, water, and of course the cow I now have stationed in the back yard...LOL seriously a ton of 1% milk and my protien shakes. I have started having Fibre One bar once a day as well. I am afraid to strain as I don't want roids or to start spotting, so I have a real dilema going on.
3) Told Doc I can not have the glucose drink for Diabetes as it is was too sugary and I can not do fizz at all, 2 years post op and it feels like peroxide on an open sore when I drink anything fizzy. What other options do I have, Did I hear (or read something on here) about a jelly bean test? if so how many jelly beans (may be able to do that one. Told him I could eat chocolate, he laughed at me but I was SERIOUS......
4) Worrying, thought I would throw that one in....LOL I guess that will never stop. One day my breasts (nipples) hurt the next morning they don't, but with the course of the day they begin to irritate. Nausea is still off and on but not all that bad, it only stays for a brief time. I know I am early, but I just want everything to be OK. No cramping (other than gas and Constipation, once I go I am fine), no spotting, no vomitting, no excessive CM, hmmm, can't think of anything else at this moment.
Thanks for everyone's help. Next Appointment is 4 weeks away (dec 29th), no Ultrasound yet either, kinda bummed about that, Doc is looking around 10 weeks , will be 9 at next appt. Wants to see our opinion on the testings for Downs.
Again Thank You for your Help
If you do the IPS tests, it's very non-invasive. It involves 2 sets of bloodwork and 1 ultrasound. 1st set of bloodwork and ultrasound are done at around 12 weeks, and then the last set of bloodwork is done at around 16 weeks. This test will give you an idea of the percentage of risk your child is for Downs and other neurological issues.
You may be able to hold off on the amnio until you get the results of the IPS. Your GP could also send you for a dating u/s. Which probably in about 2 weeks, you'd be able to hear a heartbeat if they did it transvag. I could see and hear the heartbeat at 7weeks 3 days and I didn't have it trans.
As for the glucose test, I did a fasting test. I didnt eat anything for 12-14hours (overnight) and then went first thing in the morning for a blood test.. went and had breakfast, and came back 2hours later for another test for comparison.
Other pregnancy symptoms... I didn't even realize I was pregnant for almost 6 weeks, so I did not pay attention to any signs or symptoms. I'm glad I didn't... woo how stressful!
2) You should still be able to take stool softeners, even with RNY. They usually recommend Colace. If you seriously can not take pills in any form for whatever reason, there are liquid options, but they taste nasty so be aware. You could also try to increase your fruit juices if you can handle them, to help with the constipation. Apple juice is usually recommended.
3) Have you ever had GD before? You may not have to do GD testing if you can compromise with daily glucose testing instead. If after a certain amount of time your numbers look good for a 3 month period then you shouldn't need to take the test at all.
I personally don't do the glucose testing because I don't think it's good for mom or baby to ingest so much unnatural sugar like that at once after fasting.
There are many midwives who will do the alternative with the jelly beans. Many say a regular old pancake breakfast will give you the same results as those nasty drinks.
4) Worrying is normal. This is my 9th pregnancy and hoping it will be my 8th baby. My last pregnancy ended in a miscarriage so I am worried it will happen again. Breast tenderness comes and goes. Mine is worse when I wear a bra and then take it off later in the day. I have round ligament pains, and have had them since I was 4 wks preg. I've had some spotting too. My m/s has started this week and it's making for some good scale readings, LOL
Good luck with all of your decisions!

Re the constipation...I'd suggest rather than metamucil - which will turn into a blobby jelly fish in your drink if you don't drinkit immediately - try Benefiber. It won't turn into a jelly fish, doesn't do anything texture or taste wise to your drink, but it does work.
I don't know anything about the glucose test...but like jelly beans - only Jelly Bellys though - so wouldn't mind a test that involved them! : )
Not much can be done about the worrying...once you've had a mc, I think you'll worry with the next pregnancy(s****il you're holding your little one in your arms. Just keep it in check and remember to take it one day at a time.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.
I can talk about the constipation issues! I have suffered with consitpation ever since I had RNY surgery. I was on a pill to help it but once the Dr. found out I was pregnant they took me off of it and I am on lactulose. It is a sugay drink but it is not absorbed into your body. I also take benefiber with my tea in the morning and I also take stool softners. So far everything together has been helping.
