I posted several weeks ago about natural childbirth and how people opting for scheduled C-sections and getting an epi was against what I believe in, I believe in letting the baby come into the world drug free so give him/her the best chance possible and to help ward away PPD.
The tread was long, there were posts in every direction, some heated. I learned a lot about others situations and how honestly no 2 births are the same – the cir****tances, women, baby size, pain tolerance, health issues vary so widely.

I have recently been hospitalized… a lot, with kidney stones and had to get surgery to remove the largest. I am 36 weeks preg now, I gave birth naturally by choice with my daughter almost 4 years ago and the pain of childbirth was a nuisance headache compared to the pain of my kidney stones. I passed 10 and had 1 (8 mm… that’s larger than a 1 ct diamond) surgically removed – the stone that passed down the newly operated on, instrument inserted, 8 mm jagged stone ripped through urethra was so painful I passed out and it took 6 ml of morphine just to stop me from ripping the tile off the L&D floor when I woke up.

SOOOOoooo here’s Kim who is very gung ho and on her high horse to you guys about not injecting these babes with drugs, on vicodin and Norco for 9 days every 4 hours, on a morphine pump for 6 days, in the OR getting a spinal (which by the way is the same as an epidural I’m guessing… and I was VERY afraid of the needle in my back – it was no big deal at all – for me it was the same pressure as getting my toe nails clipped at the salon.), so my hopes and dreams of a drug free baby are shot to high heaven – and after all I’ve been through if I walk into L&D when this little boy decides to come and I want an epidural… I’m getting one. I hope not to, but a natural delivery is a personal choice just as is a drugged one… you guys are all so correct.

I think that my chosen method of Hypnobirthing takes a lot of strength, self control, concentration, pain tolerance, prayer, and support – so much is going on in my life right now that if I can’t get it together enough to have all those ducks lined up – it will be better for baby and me to relax via drugs.

Just wanted to say thanks for opening my eyes and tell all of you that were vehemently opposed to my soapbox… you were right.

~Kim

PS. Also, my sweaty butt story that I posted a while back is in this months issue (Dec) of Pregnancy Magazine! :)

Goodness gracious, have I been there! Mine started at 16 weeks pregnant my last pregnancy and had me in and out of the OR over 15 times until my little man was born. Then the day after he was born, back into the OR I went for two more lithotripsy surgeries on each kidney to blast the stones out before I even left the labor and delivery floor to go home. Mine were as big as yours, "in-humanly" able to pass naturally. And I SOOOOOOOO agree, I've never felt pain like that in my life, NEVER! I've given birth vaginally to two babies and been through plenty in life, but again, NEVER anything like that!

I'm glad to hear your doing well! I would be prepared for a long battle if I were you, I had stent in, and stent out over 10 different times and the lithotripsy twice after I delivered. Three weeks after the lithotripsy, I went back in for another catscan and low and behold there were plenty of more stones in each kidney sitting there waiting and developing. It's been quite the journey and has left me with quite the story to tell! And my journey continues as I hit 16 weeks pregnany with my next well, TODAY! LoL Let's just hope this pregnancy doesn't mimick lasts!!!

Kim,

First....Happy Thanksgiving!

Second, you are absolutely entitled to which ever way you want to give birth.  I was just trying to let you see the other side of things.  No offense taken on my part.

Third...so sorry that you had to go thru kidney stones while pregnant.  hope you are feeling better now.

Fourth....Thank you for posting that we opened your eyes..not many people would step up and admit that they didn't see someone else's side.  It take more of a woman to do that then to post your original post.

Fifth....As long as your baby arrives healthy and happy who cares how it happened.  Natural, induced, drugs, no drugs, C-Section.

Ok...so glad that you are on the road to recovery and hope that this baby arrives quickly and painlessly which ever way you choose :)

O.M.G. You poor thing!!!!! I can not even begin to imagine.... shudder. You are right no two are the same, I had epidurals with both the girls, but still hold out hope that this next time around I can go nartural - I am scared to though - as it is I only pushed twice with both my girls and am afraid that when they want me to pause of only give little pushes I won't be able too! LOL!

I hope you start felling better soon - it just sounds horrific!

I hate pain.  Pain sucks.

I lived through chronic pain throughout my two pregnancies.. If I had not had norco, and vicodin and perccocet helping me, I would have been a horrible parent to Kaitlin while pregnant with Daniel.. at least when pregnant with Kaitlin, I could just stay in bed 24/7 (and did).

I hate that you had to go through all of that to see what some of us go through daily -- I really do, but perhaps now you have a measure of understanding now as to what some people live with on a daily basis now.  I only wish there were a "virtual" way of experiencing that without actually having to go through it for medical professionals, our spouses, etc. to have some empathy.

I hope things get better for you, I really do.

I just have one thing to say..........................kidney stones suck!!! I suffer from them to but thankful that mine always break up before passing. The pain of them traveling thru is unbearable I could not imagine having to pass them whole and at that size. Hope you feel better soon!!!!

hugs. my sister has one kidney and her fair share of stones to go with it and I cannot even fathom having those and NOT using pain meds in some fashion.

I hope you end up with the birth you want...and NO More kidney stones
