So overall I found out that I am having a baby girl...Yay!!

Now the question. My ultrasound took about an hour and a half to do because she wouldn't cooperate. I even have to go back for a follow-up because they did not get good pictures of many things. But I was sent up to gentic counseling....they couldn't find her nasal bridge/bone. They say this is a marker for down syndrome. Now I've already decided that I am going to have her no matter what but I am so scared...and I am not sure. The woman who does the amino test told me if I wanted I could wait until after they re-do my ultrasound on December 7th (just in case it was a mistake) and she recommends I do.

Have any of you ladies every been told the same thing? She told me not to stress to much because all of my other markers were good including all my screenings and this is the only thing they are basing their concern off of. I even googled the hell out of what the bone should look like and I can see it in my 12 week ultrasound pics...but the technician clearly said it could not be found this time and not that it was just small...so that makes me question if it was just because she wasn't behaving to start wit. I am just soooo scared and nervous and lost.

yay a girl... I never had this happen to me but I am wishing you the best... If it is in the 12 weeks I cant imagine it not being there at 18...try and relax and double check on the 7th maybe she will cooperate then... :) think positive...

It could be that she was not cooperating. I would wait until your next ultrasound. My daughter is 7 years old. When I was pregnant with her they said her umbilical cord only had 2 vessels instead of three. They told me all the horrible things it could mean for her and that she would be small. I was sent to a high risk doctor to monitor her growth and the flow from her cord. I went twice monthly for u/s. When she was born she was 8 pounds and 18 inches long. When my OB cut the cord he clearly saw  3 vessels. He even sent it to the lab and they confirmed there were three vessels there. I guess my point is they are not 100% accurate. I went in 2x a month from the time I was 18 weeks pregnant until I delivered at 39 weeks. They even check the flow of the cord and some how they never saw the third vessel. It was clearly there once they were able to see it out of the womb.

congrats on the babygirl!!!  i had the DS marker come back abnormal and had the amino done when i was 4-5mos along!!  scared too death is an understatement!!!  and waiting for the appt then the results was a ling cruel wait!!!  but as u can see my son was just fine, a healthy babyboy despite what i was told!!  i know its a waste of time to tell u to relax, that everything will be fine but honestly dont get too worked up and cause yourself stress when most likely things are going to be fine!!  good luck mama and make sure u keep us posted!!!

Oh that is so assuring to hear. I am worried but not toooo worried as I am kinda feeling it is a mistake. I also feel like the counselor was telling me not to worry as she was not pushing the amnio but waiting till I had the u/s redone (and if she saw a need I am sure they would have pushed more for that day and not waiting). Also to say it WAS NOT there at all and I know for a fact it is makes me think it was just a cooperation thing. And all my screenings have been good so far (don't know about Quad yet cause just had it done).

Question though...if you don't mind, what marker did you have come up? I have been searching for information of the nasal bridge one and not much is coming up...it seems to be new. The heart was fine, the brain awesome, so were the bones, and the kidneys. So it worries me that this is all they are going off of.

Woohoo congrats on baby girl!!

As far as the risk on DS. I had 2 friends that were told their baby's would be born with downs based on all the "Screenings" and both babies are perfect. They are just SCREENINGS not tests that are a final determination. I would imagine that since all looked OK at your last US that she just missed something. Also - did the OB or the high risk Dr take a look at the US or just the tech?

*hugs* I am sure that all will be just fine!

At first it was just the tech..but because she was having such a hard time getting pictures of other things she called in a dr. (I didnt find out this was an issue until they were done and cleaning me up...so I couldnt even ask them to check one more time). I remember her having a hard time getting a face shot but didnt think anything of it. And at the end all they told me was they couldnt find the nasal bridge and told me to go up to gentic counseling...I didnt even know what the problem was until the woman up there told me. All I could do was cry.

I just worry that I am scared for nothing and this is all a false alarm. I mean they were having trouble getting pictures of most things and thats why I have to go back. Also I was only dating 18 weeks on the spot and they won't do anatomical scans until you are 18 weeks on the spot. And they clearly were stating it WAS NOT there and I can see it on my 12 week scan...so it is there. Might be small...which is still a problem...but it IS there. So thats already an error. I guess I'll just wait for my results from my quad scan and if anything comes back off with that i'll get the the amnio but if not, I'll assume she just has a small nose like mama.

Congratulations on expecting a GIRL! The waiting part and not knowing are horrendous, to say the least. IMHO, I would wait until the next u/s and call the OB now to ask for another one ASAP. If the 12 week appt went fine, I don't see why/how the bridge wouldn't show up now? I have no experience on this one, just my untrained opinion.

When expecting my now 8yr old, the 18wk u/s showed only 2 of the 4 heart chambers. His HB was erratic at times and the tech told me that his heart didn't *appear* to be developing properly. I was told to come back in 2 weeks for another u/s. 2 weeks?! Internet searches yielded terrifying scenarios and scared the **** out of me to the point I was ill. I was stupid to have looked there. Anyway, I called my OB two days later and explained how scared and distraught I was. He did another u/s that week and everything was fine.

Soooo, while I don't have a medical degree, I can assure you that u/s results are not always accurate. The position of the baby, the amount of fluid, the amount of fat on mom, the tech's experience, the clarity of the machine, the interpretation of the tech - these are all factors that influence results.

So my advice is to get another u/s and take it from there. In all of my pregnancies, the u/s's have shown different results at different times and by different techs. It's not an accurate science still.

Hugs,

Jo

YAY! It's a girl!!

As far as the down syndrome is concerned, like everyone said you cannot diagnose downs from an ultrasound.  Did you have your blood work done at 16 weeks for down syndrome?  I would get the anmio if your worried, I'm sure everything will be just fine!!

Congrats on a baby girl!! I am not sure about the ultrasound results but I would say not to worry and to wait for a second one. She will be precious no matter what!!
