A lil' update - PIC HEAVY!

Hey there!!  Sorry I've been gone so long.  Being a mommy to 4 is very time consuming!!  The boys are loving their little sisters and the girls are doing great for the most part.

As you know, the girls were born 4w2d early and they were HUGE at 8.6 and 7.2 lbs.  It was a CRAZY day especially after dumping my blackberry in the toilet that morning...I just KNEW it was going to be the day because I had NO phone numbers or email addresses available.  LOL.  I was lucky to memorize my hubby's and mom's cell numbers.  All I had was my hubby's laptop in which I could update my Facebook.  HOW SAD!  ha!  I was at the hospital for a NST and to drop off my 24 hour urine...my proteins came back even more elevated than the day before so they kept me for observation.  They wouldn't let me eat or drink anything from 11 am to 4 pm and my blood sugars were crashing.  At about 4 pm I found a piece of candy in my purse and decided to sneak it.  Well, it was cinnamon and it caused my to have horrible gas!!  I was trying so hard not to fart that my contractions started up. LOL!!!  They were coming heavy and steady and my belly would NOT go down.  I was having to breathe through the contractions and finally when the OB got there, she took one look at me going thru a contraction and said "yeah, let's deliver!!"  Thank you cinnamon candy!!  HA!

I was not ready and didn't have my bag or my hubby with me...let alone car seats!  I called my hubby and said "Hurry!  It's Birth Day!"  That was at 5:30...he raced to the hospital, they threw the scrubs at him, and started instantly.

I had a spinal block and thought I was going to die!  That made me feel so horrible and lying on my back, I could not breathe.  I thought that was from the spinal but as soon as the girls were delivered, I realized it was THEM causing me to feel that way.  WHEW!!  What a relief it was to get those girls out of me!  They were born at 6:21 and 6:22.

The entire staff was placing bets as to whether the girls were identical or not.  They had one HUGE placenta and had to get a bigger bucket for it cuz it didn't fit in the usual one.  Even though they were a pound apart, they looked so much alike and so different from Kellen.  I didn't get to see them except for a quick second though...apparently I hemorrhaged and they had to take care of that and then send me off to recovery for an hour to be observed.  I wanted to see them so bad!!!  But the spinal made me so loopy and then later I was throwing up so bad that they kept the girls in the nursery overnight.  I didn't even have the strength to hold one.  I was so sad!!  I wanted to nurse them the moment they were born - but didn't even have the mind-set to tell them that in the hospital so they were given formula and soothies.  Ugh.  So much for my dream.  They REFUSED my breast and acted like my milk was crap.  The looks on their faces every time I put a boob in their mouth was hideous.  I decided to pump but they still wouldn't take my milk.  Aargh!

So, anyhoo, they lost some weight before we left the hosp.  A full pound for the chubbers and almost a pound for the smaller one.  They wanted us to come in for weight checks and then wanted to keep them in the nicu but we convinced them to let us try our hardest to get them to feed better.  So, now at 2.5 weeks, they are FINALLY back to their birthweight.  Well, almost.

I don't think they are identical anymore.  We can all tell them apart pretty easily now.  They still aren't  "cute" yet - they are red and blotchy still.  ;-)  Clara, poor thing, came home with a HIDEOUS diaper rash that broke the skin and has been bleeding ever since.  We are working with the pediatrician to do EVERYTHING we can to get it cleared up.  Nothing is working.  Other than that, they are great.  I just wish they were eating a little more at each feeding.  But, they are growing.

Here are some pictures....I think...if not, I'm working on it.

Sandy

ETA:  I gained a total of 57 lbs with the girls.  It's been 2.5 weeks and I've lost 51 lbs with 6 left to lose.  However, I fit into NOTHING!!!  Maternity is way too big and my regular (and designer!!!) jeans won't even button.  I just have this big ol' stretched out tummy.  Ugh.

What d'ya mean 'they're not 'cute' yet'?!?!  They're beautiful...and I can't believe how big they are!

I know this may sound like a stupid question....but having never had twins....do non-identical twins share a placenta? Wouldn't there only be one big placenta if they were identical?

I'm glad to hear how well things went and that both girls arrived healthy.  Hopefully Clara's diaper rash clears up - that sounds unbelievably painful - and they continue to grow...and quit giving you 'ookey' faces when you give them breast milk.  Have you tried talking to a lactation specialist?  Maybe there's something you are eating that's making the milk taste funny to them?

Also - 51 pounds lost is amazing!  I assume that as the swelling goes down, you'll be back into those deisgner jeans soon.

Congrats - you did a good baking job!

Thanks Holly!
We learned that even with fraternal twins, sometimes if the placentas are close together, they can FUSE.  Who knew?!  LOL.  That actually happened with my aunt's twins.  They are definitely fraternal and she had mentioned at my baby shower that their placentas had fused into one.  (we aren't biologically related - she's an aunt thru marriage)  When we had our last ultrasound, John asked the tech if they were for sure frats.  She said that their placentas were so close together that they could be identical or that their placentas could have fused together also and just be fraternal.  So, we have no idea!  I am going to call the hospital later today and see if I can figure it out.  John is driving me crazy about this...even though they now look so different to us.  :-)

As for the lactation consultant, they kept saying that I'd see one but then the hospital's consultant ended up taking a last minute vacation because her sister went into labor in another part of the state.  Ugh.  So we went 3 days without seeing one.  Then the peds office asked if we wanted to see one...I said yes but they never set it up.  We went thru so much formula in the mean time that they wouldn't even use the type of bottles I bought.  I had to buy ones that matched the hospital's!
And my milk...yeah, it's REALLY watery.  No cream whatsoever.  I even tried it (gross, I know) and it didn't have ANY flavor to it.  So I gave in.  Ugh.

Thanks Liz!  We still haven't heard.  DH is bugging me to call the hospital, in which they hosp told us our OB would get the results...and he never did.  So, back to the hosp's medical records department I guess!  Ugh.

They are cute!

So the diaper rash.......Dylan had terrible diaper rash when she was a blink of an eye old.  We tried everything.  Here's what finally worked (at the suggestion of our pedi).   We had to leave her diaperless for 24 hours and only clean her off in the sink using warm water.   After we were allowed to put the diaper back on her we were told to try some Aquaphor and keep her "dry" as possible.

After about a week, she was good as new.     I will say that her diaper rash was caused by her pooping every 5 seconds though, so who knows.

That's what's going on with Clara too...she poops CONSTANTLY.  Chloe is a 2x a day kind of girl but her sister...EVERY diaper is poopy.  The ped said that can be a sign of lactose intolerance so she had us switch to a lactose free formula.  Last night was the first time she didn't have a poopy diaper at all thru the night.  WHEW!
I was told to keep the diaper off as much as possible but we were going thru so many towels from her over-active butt.  So, we have been using a hair dryer.  It helps.  I will have to try the Aquaphor.  We are not to use wipes on her, I have my squirt bottle from the hospital that we've been using and then I pat her dry with a cotton gauze then use the dryer.  Her poor butt...looks like someone took a potato peeler to her buns.

They are so adorable!! I can't blieve how big they were, you must have been very uncomfortable at the end!  Did they tell you that they would check the placenta to see if they were identical or not? When my boys were born, they were pretty sure they were fraternal, but they said that since they are the same sex, they send the placenta's out to check anyway.  They were fraternal!  Hope you are doing alright, those first 3 months are a blur, don't remember too much and I can't imagine having 2 other ones to take care of!  Just remember not to turn down any help, hopefully you have some help!  Congrats, they are beautiful!
