Pumping advice

Veteran pumpers out there:  I am trying to pump for my little one and wanted to get some feedback on the most efficient way to build a milk storage.  So far she is breast feeding like a champ.  So well, in fact that I have barely any time to pump!  I am not stressing it too much because I have about 7 more weeks of maternity leave (she's a month old) but I have been making an effort to pump at least once a day and would like to see better results.

Here's my questions:
1.  How much should I be getting in output?  I pump for about a 1/2 hour with a Medela Pump in Style (double electric) and I usually only get about 2 oz or so.

2.  Would it be beneficial to supplement with Fenugreek or Mother's Tea if I have an adequate supply for baby while breastfeeding?  (I was thinking maybe it would help with the pumping supply?)

3.  Is it even worth it to pump AFTER she's eaten?  Sometimes that is the only time I have available because she is happy, satisfied and calm.

I am open to any and all suggestions.  I'd really love to get a good freezer full of boob juice for this kiddo before I go back to work.  Right now I don't even want to use ANY of it because there really isn't that much to use!  It would be nice to be able to run to the store without stressing out about her needing me.  I'd like to avoid formula too, if possible.  So - any suggestions?

Hi Riah!
Congrats on your new Baby!
Here are my suggestions:

Even though she's eating at the breast, follow each feeding with a pumping.
Make sure you're getting plenty of rest and fluids.
You could try the Mother's Tea and see if that increases your supply.

You have an excellent pump and you should be getting the stimulation you need.  Perhaps she's emptying you.  Is she gaining adequate weight?  Are you emptying one side totally before puttin her on the other side?  Babies are much better "breast pumps" than breast pumps are.  If she's getting the one side totally emptied before going to the other side, your milk will increase. Alternate sides to empty with each feeding.  By totally emptying you're giving her the hind milk that will keep her satiated longer and she'll grow better.

I hope this helps!  Good Luck!

I would pump after she eats.   I was lucky, sometimes Hannah feel asleep before we switched sides, so I could pump from the full side.

Try not to stress about how much you getting when you pump.   I found if I didn'****ch the bottles while pumping then I would get more milk.

I also only pumped one breast at a time and massaged that breast during pumping.   I also have the Medela pump in style.   If I tried to pump both breast at once I couldn't hardly get anything.  It was more time consuming to only be able to pump one at a time, but worth it in the long run.

Even if you only get 1/2 an ounce after she eats, that's 1/2 an ounce toward your freezer supply.
I tried the fenugreek and couldn't really tell much difference.  I also went on a short regimen of Reglan.  It helped me make more milk, but I didn't like the way I felt while taking it.  As soon as I stopped taking it, the extra milk stopped too.
What helped more than anything was to drink lots of fluids.   Drink all you can stand and then drink about 40 more ounces a day lol.

I always got pitiful amounts when pumping during the time I was home full time and nursing Rowan. now that I pump twice a day while he's at daycare, I get much more! I don't have a freezer stockpile, he eats whatever I pump the following day.
Don't try to pump for half an hour at a time! Really, you're going to get 90% of what you can get in 10 minutes - anything more is just torture!

1.  How much should I be getting in output?   Every breast is different. Some breasts don't do well with pumps while other breasts like being pumped and nursed.

2.  Would it be beneficial to supplement with Fenugreek or Mother's Tea if I have an adequate supply for baby while breastfeeding?  It wouldn't hurt, that's for sure. Make sure you are eating enough as well as dinking enough to make the milk. The more you pump inbetween feedings the quicker your supply will increase. Try pumping while she is napping to stimulate an "extra feeding" from your breasts to help increase your milk. Increasing your supply can take up to a week to do if done religiously.

3.  Is it even worth it to pump AFTER she's eaten?  It is worth it because milk is made on demand. The more that comes out the more milk is made. It may not seem worth it at the moment because you get so little out, but it's the stimulation you are looking for to help stimulate your body to make more milk.

I only got about 2 ounces when I pumped.  I hate pumping and when I have to give my DD a bottle she gets formula.  I did a lot of research and 2 to 4 ounces is what to expect when you EBF and pump.  So you are right on target.
One suggestion I read was, feed baby on one side, switch baby to the other side then pump the first side while the baby eats on the second.  The baby is supposed to stimulate a second let down on the side you are pumping.
I worked so hard on building a freezer stash, but it just didn't work out for me.  I hope you are able to do better.  My freezer supply is 2 bags of 4 ounces each, how pitiful!  I should probably feed that to her soon! Oh, I tried Fenugreek and it didn't work for me, I also tried something else that I cannot remember, oh my God, both made me so sick to my stomach!  It's worth a try though so people have great success with Fenugreek.
Good luck and you are doing great!
