Prenatal Vit. Is that all I need?
Yeah, you're gonna need more than that.
First off, yeah, you're gonna need to take at least another multi -- whether you want it to be another prenate or a multi, it's up to you and your OB. I'd call him or talk to your nut and discuss it. Some OB's get the wibbles about the vitamin A. Vitamin A in HIGH doses (and I mean A in terms of acetate or palmitate because beta carotene is not fetal toxic in ANY DOSE WHATSOEVER) can be harmful to fetal brain development -- but remember we malabsorb fat-solubles in high-order and A is one of those pesky fat-solubles -- wow, I have too many dashes.. okay anyway, A gives OB's the wibbles. So you need to tell your OB that you malabsorb about half of your vitamin and for you to get a full vitamin, you need to take 2. Ask him if he/she wants you to take a regular multi or two prenates and see what they say.
And yes, calcium. CALCIUM. CALCIUM You want bones at the end of the pregnancy, yes? 2000mg of citrate. Make sure it has D in it. D is vital.
B-12. Sublingal is the way to go if you can stomach them -- if not, a pill is okay, but def. not the way to go. A shot is the best way, of course, but who wants a shot if they can avoid needles?
Iron sucks -- but babies leech iron from us like no tomorrow. If you like to poo, and trust me that constipation from pregnancy is bad enough (and from the prenate), try and find carbonyl if you need to supplment beyond your prenate. If you have a Target, their pharmacy can special order it for you. Trust me -- ferrous sulfate is like chewing on a metal pipe -- and I refuse to take that crap. I really would rather eat rust.
If you start puking, start taking a B1 supplement. Your brain will thank you.
Also, plan on getting blood draws every 8 weeks. Ask for at least the following:
hct, hgb, blood serum iron, ferritin, b1, b12, folate, pth, and 0,25(OH)D
That's iron, nervous and brain, and bone health for you and baby right there. Doc will probably add a few more. These are the ones that tend to tank the fastest in us.
