OT: Freakin' RAIN!
Rainy season has started with a vengence in Indonesia. My husband called me at work today to tell me that the 2nd floor (yes...SECOND floor) of our house had flooded. Our damn balcony does not drain properly - it's been an ongoing problem for the last 3-4 months every time it rains, but we've always caught it before it got TOO bad - literally bailing it with plastic bowls while we wait for the management to get there to drain it. Well today..no one caught it. The maid was taking a nap (long story for another post, another day) and didn't see it...and my DH was upstairs and didn't see it. He came downstairs and the entire 2nd floor was under water about 2 inches deep - from wall to wall...and I have a HUGE family room, about 25x30 feet!!! All my cookbooks that were stacked on the floor in preparation for packing are wet...all my CDs/DVDs are wet...my rugs are wet. The management sent a team over to help clean the mess and took the rugs to clean/dry them (the color was bleeding - one is an antique one, one is from Azerbaijan and made with natural colors, not color fast; and two are just rugs...nothing fancy) , so we'll have to see how they fair. My laptop was on the 'lap board' on the floor by the chair. The board is soaked, but because the computer was on top of it, it's OK....and we still have to 'test' the transformers that sit on the floor.
To top it all off...it took 2 hours and 45 minutes to get home today because of traffic and flooding. I left work at 3:45 to get a head start on the roads because I knew it was flooding...I walked in the door a little after 6:30 p.m.! Indonesia's not BAD...but God knows I will NOT miss these little 'special things' about Indonesia!!!

Exactly one month from today, we'll be wheels up. I just went and paid for the tickets. Pack out is in two weeks, we'll live out of a suitcase for two weeks, then live out of a suitcase for two months waiting for our 'stuff.'

Monsoon season? Geez Holly, that really stinks! I hope most everything can be salvaged - or at least the most sentimental and/or valuable. Maybe this is karma's way of letting you know that moving is indeed the right decision?
Good luck and keep us posted!

Fortunately, it didn't get any pictures or anything. I have a fan blowing on my books to dry them, then if they're too wrinkled up, I'll iron them page by page to flatten them back out. It's more a pain in the ass than anything else....especially because we've been back and forth with the management on a regular basis about this problem, and you feel like you can't leave your house unattended for fear it'll rain while you're out. Supposedly they're going to come drill some more holes in the balcony to help with the drainage problem. It only has to work for one month...then it can wash away!
