Ulcers and First Trimester.....
So I had surgery in Feb (Lap RNY) and ever since then I have had an ulcer that causes me to feel like I have a fireball in my chest if I dont take nexium or prilosec. I called my OB to see if it was ok to continue with these and apparently they fall into "category c" which is not safe for the first trimester...
besides tums....and carafate, what can i take to make this pain go away......ugh!!

Nexium is Category "B". Go to www.safefetus.com if you want to check it out. I took Nexium through 2 post op pregnancys. Prilosec is "c". You may want to check with your OB again on this.

The actual drug name is ESOMEPRAZOLE (for Nexium) at www.safefetus.com. and it is definately a category "B"!

Nexium is fine, but Prilosec is a no-no. I recently had to go on Nexium for a suspected ulcer and my insurance won't cover it...my GI doc is awesome and he is going to give me free samples of it for the remainder of my pregnancy since it is the only safe thing to take!
My GI doc actually conferred with my OB and it was my OB who said that Nexium is safe.
Good luck!

I have an ulcer and I take Aciphex - my Primary Care Physician looked it up and it is a Category B. Looks like a couple others are Category B as well - check with your doc for a presc. change. I hope you feel better soon! I know how painful it is.
