38 and TTC
Aloha everybody....
I decided to poke myelf in here and see what experiences everyone is having.
I had WLS nearly 3 years ago. Have never had children...actually gave up on the idea years ago. Not that I could not...I did get pregnant in my early 20's but miscarried (was morbidly obese, smoked, etc.). I did foster care for a few years before WLS and I do have a 5 year old I adopted as a baby.
But life since WLS for me, as it has everyone, has drastically changed. I have a LIFE now. I want to have a baby and have discussed it with my ob/gyn *****moved my IUD last week.
My question for you all is...who out there at 35+ has experienced pregnancy and to top it off pregnancy after WLS? My ob/gyn is not as concerned about the fact that I am post WLS...he has handled that on many occassions. But the fact that I am 38 has risks and as time goes on and I get closer to 40 the risks multiply. So to use the old phrase...My CLOCK is TICKING!
Any advice?

This is just the "norm" now. Go ahead and try and just see what happens. As long as you are taking care of your body and self, you need not pay attention to the statistics etc. You are your own experience. Yes 35+ is considered "advanced" maternal age and you'll have to undergo all the "special tests" BUT there are great chances of you being fine, of the baby being fine. Trust the process and the timing of life.
My boss, who is 50 (had help with fertility -she's a single mom, It's her biological miracle egg & donor sperm) has a 3 year old beautiful, beautiful boy. She waited all her life for him. She had him early, but he is perfectly fine. Both my maternal and paternal grandmothers had their last children at 46 & 47 - again, the best children - I can't imagine life without my uncle Carl and aunt Lily.
When my time comes, I am going to do all I can then trust God. Why not me? Why not you?
There are so many of us deserving mothers to be out there. We all waited for "the right time" because we wanted the best. Time is never right, money is never right, situations are never right, but we all do the best we can and manage - it's the circle of life.
Best,
Leila

Hi Elaine,
I had WLS in June 2005. Got pregnant 10 months out of surgery. I am now 38 and just found out I am pregnant again. Will be 39 in Feb. My husband and I have been trying for almost a year. I never thought it was going to happen. The OBGYN told me 4 months ago when I went in if I wasn't pregnant 3 months from then to come back in. So if you are wanting to start, get on it is all I can say! LOL
Good luck!

There are a good sized handful of women here 35+ years of age. I believe I'm one of (if not THE) the oldest - and I'll be 42 in March. I have been pg 4x since January 2008...3x on my own, 1x via IUI. My mc's have nothing to do w/my WLS, though.
Re 'special testing' mentioned by a PP...that's strictly up to you. The drs would recommend testing for Down's Syndrome etc, but that's optional.
Good luck in whatever you decide!

I had WLS March of 2007 and discovered I was pregnant in September of 2007. I was 36 when I had the baby boy (he was also conceived after having a tubal ligation reversal so he was really quite the surprise). He was healthy and it was the best pregnancy I have had.
I am now 37, will be 38 next month, and conceived again in July, an oops pregnancy which has turned out to be an oops of triplets. I am having even better time with gestational diabetes. I am actually further along without meds than I was with the last pregnancy. My sugars are very controlled. I am 24 weeks on Wednesday. The only issues are with preterm labor which is normal for multiples. I am currently hospitalized on bedrest but all the tests on the babies have been perfectly normal and healthy. I have had to have the advanced maternal age special tests that have been talked about by other posters here. Although many of them I was not able to do this time due to the hormone levels of multiples make most of the tests unreliable.
There are no guarantees in life but if you want to try and get pregnant, take your vitamins, make sure you have the okay from your OB and GO FOR IT!!!!

Hi,
I had two boys before my Bypass in 2006, both were clomid pregnancies. Had my bypass in 2006 and then a tubal in 2008. When the tubal pregnancy resulted in loss of one fallopian tube, thought my baby days were over, but got pregnant again with no fertility drugs. It was my best pregnancy yet because I weighed so much less. I felt way better at 38 pregnant at 216 pounds than at 28 at 316 pounds. Don't be afraid! the WLS helps so much.
(I did got to a perinatologist due to the WLS and my AMA (Advanced maternal age, which is anothe way to spell O-L-D! haha), I saw a nutritionist as well, but she really didn't tell me anything new. I don't think the WLS or the age was a problem at all.
Hope it helps to hear about someone else's experience, that's why I come here.
Blessings!
