Accuracy of HPT's after Gastric Bypass

Oooh, I'm freaking out a little, but that's normal whether you're TTC or just thinking you might be having a "happy accident". I'm already a mother of a 6 year old, so I've done the whole pregnancy thing pre-wls, but life after wls is somewhat of a mystery full of new experiences (or so it has proven to be so for me).

Post WLS, my periods have been VERY regular. 28 days on the spot, to be exact. Well, here I am 4 weeks past due for my period and, as is par for the course when I have miss my period in the past, my mind is playing with me.

There is a very good chance that I could be pregnant, but a test at 2 weeks past due for my period - negative. Two tests at 3 weeks past due for my period - negative. One test two days ago (at 3 days to 4 weeks past due for my period) - negative.

So now, I'm wondering WTF. I called my GYN last week and she said to wait a week, take another test and then come in if I'm pregnant. I asked her about the blood test and she said it wasn't necessary because at my "age" (only 34 years old), it's normal to start missing periods.

So, my next step is to find a new GYN, because every damn time I ask her a question, the answer is "it's just your age". I asked her about the decreased sex drive, her answer was "just your age". Huh, well, it was actually my antidepressant - once I changed it, I became lil' mrs. horndog with the hubby.

Anywhoo, just had to share and thought this might be the appropriate board. We'd love to have another baby, and after this experience we're going to go ahead into TTC mode, but I don't know what the deal is with my body right now. I'm beginning to wonder if HPT's just don't work well after bypass. Maybe I'll get a blood test this week to see (that is, with a new obgyn, of course!)

*Edited to include this : I was also very disturbed that my GYN didn't want me to come in to be checked out - it could be PCOS, an ectopic pregnancy, or any myriad of things delaying my period. Geez louise. I hate this not knowing.

WLS affects your digestive system, but has no bearing whatsoever on the accuracy of an HPT.

At 4 days late, I might think it was too early to test, but by 4 weeks late, an HPT would be accurate.

IMHO, switch to another Gyn. 34 is not the normal age of menopause and missed periods aren't something to take a wait-and-see approach over.

Good luck!

I'm 34 too. At 34 it may not be "normal" to be going through menopause, but peri-menopause could be normal.

However, with that said, I too would demand a blood test, just because there are some women who do not have positive HPT but they do have positive blood tests.

But at the same time, if you don't have normal symptoms such as, exhaustion, sore breasts, nausea, food aversions, or heightened smell and or hormones then it could just be a late period.

Also, with such a low weight, if you have a low calorie intake then it could affect your cycles. Some women who lose weight fast (and I know you are almost a year out now) their cycles can slow or even stop for a while. Your weight loss can effect your cycles.

Have you been charting your temps at all? If you have been then you'd know for sure if you've ovulated and if you are pregnant. Normally you won't get a period until you've ovulated and if you haven't ovulated yet then you obviously won't cycle usually. TCOFY.com is a great place to start on learning how to chart your temps. This can also tell you a lot about your hormone levels and where you just might be in the peri-menopausal stage (if you are indeed heading in that direction.)

Any ways, Good luck! I hope everything turns out the way you want it to! I know last month when I was over a week late and still getting negative test results, I chaulked it up to stress and weight loss and forgot about it. Once I did a few days later the plumbing started working again.

Yeah, I'm probably just over-reacting. I've recently upped my calories (in the past couple of months), so it could just be the weight loss and calories thing throwing me out of whack.

I haven't charted my bbt, but may start doing that soon :) All this potential pregnancy talk between me and the hubby is starting to give us the "baby bug".

I am going to go to a GYN just to get checked out anyways to make sure it isn't PCOS or something like that. I've had some major exhaustion kicking and no breast tenderness (which was a big thing with my daughter). I've also had food cravings, but I chalk that up to the old food addictions trying to rear their heads. Other than that, no signs of pregnancy. I'm beginning to think that this may just be a missed period and nothing more.
