I'm starting antibiotics today. Half the time I take them, I wind up with a you know what (eew I hate even just the word).

What is the usual treatment when you're pregnant? Can I take diflucan?

I just eat 1 -2 yogurts with live cultures every day and *knock on wood* have yet to get one!

My doc discouraged diflucan while pregnant, but I was pretty far along at the time. I find it helpful to take an acidopholous capsule with every antibiotic to help prevent it.

IF you end up with one like I did this week, despite eating yogurt, I was approved for 7 day vagisil or monistat.  I'm using monistat

usually only monistat when pregnant, they don't like you taking diflucan when pregnant.

Diflucan is probably safe, but why take a systemic drug for a localized infection? You can use a vaginal cream and only treat the area that needs to be treated. I prefer to use that option even in non-pregnant women.

Probiotics such as lactobaccilli capsules or as found in yogurt are also helpful, but if you take them "along with the antibiotic", i.e., at the same time, you're killing them before they have a chance to do any good. Probiotics and antibiotics should be taken at least two hours apart.

I've only ever used the little one pill diflucan for an infection. Isn't monistat... err... messy? Or gross? If I get an infection, then I'll use a monistat or something, but non-pregnant I'd much rather just take a little pill and wait a couple of days. Isn't it sort of like using an OB tampon? I'm really clueless what those treatments are like. I've always imagined needing to wash my hands for hours after using one.

The cream is less messy than intercourse, and I know you've been doing that, lol! It also works faster than Diflucan and is more effective as well.  The only problem with the creams is that they can make latex condoms less effective--this is usually not an issue in pregnancy.

I had one they detected from my first pelvic exam after preggo.  They recommended I do the OTC 3 or 7 day.  Didn't recommend one day (I didn't ask why really).  I didn't even realize I had it so, I didn't ask for any other things.  Good luck!  Stacey
