Iron Infusion in the 1st trimester
Hi everyone,
I am 6 weeks pregnant and the hematologist assured me it was safe for IV Iron (Venofer). I have had 2 infusions of 200mg each. Something told me to look it up and I found that it is contraindicated in the 1st trimester....Do you think I hurt the baby with these infusions?? I am not going to have any more I am canceling the next 3 that are scheduled....Any Advice????

hi bridgette,
i can understand your concerns...but i would definately talk to your doctors before cancelling any future appointments. sometimes you need to weigh the risks with the benefits...i am assuming you get iron because of medical reasons...now that you have a baby inside of you,,,,,your body needs to have stablized levels...for the baby to survive. every time i have to take a medicine during pregnancy i get worried...so i can definately relate...i just think you have to discuss everything in detail. get all the facts. but most importantly......CONGRATS on your pregnancy!

I had iron infusions, early on, with both pregnancies. My twins are happy healthy babies and so far this baby is growing as she should and everything has been perfect.
Both my RE and my OB (and the infusion clinic nurses) never gave me any indication that there would be a problem with me having iron infusions.
It will be a far greater danger for you to be extremely deficient in iron while trying to carry a pregnancy. Talk to your Dr. before doing anything and discuss the benefits and risks of iron infusions.
