Question for breastfeeding moms of RNY or those who breastfed post RNY

Has anyone had trouble producing milk to breastfeed their babies after having RNY.  It's been 2 weeks since i've delivered my twin girls and i'm only producing 6-8cc/breast every 3 hours. My girls are still in the NICU and we haven't been able to try breastfeeding yet.  They want to make sure they have the suck, swallow, breathe down and bottlefeedings.  I do kangaroo care (skin to skin)contact with them also.   I'm taking an herbal supplement that the nurses recommended (Lactate support) and it hasn't really helped at all.  My next step is for them to prescribe Reglan to try to increase the breastmilk supply, but once stopped it may decrease my breast supply.  I so want to breastfeed my girls but i have a feeling i will have to supplement them with formula too.   (I'm also comfortable knowing that if everything fails that they did get the colostrum and some breast milk to help with their immunities).   Anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have a history of PCOS? I did, and I ended up not lactating at all after delivery. When my son was born, I never got more than 10 ml total. I think I'm looking at the same thing this time around too. My breasts haven't changed at all, no change in size, nothing...

There are several ongoing studies that have linked PCOS to a poor milk supply. The thinking is that during puberty, women with PCOS do not develop enough milk-producing breast tissue. Not all women with PCOS have this problem, though.

I had PCOS when I delivered my first child over 5 yrs ago.  I was able to successfully breastfeed him for the first two months exclusively.  It only became more difficult when I had to go back to work at 8 weeks post-partum and couldn't get away to pump on a regular basis.

I have not had any problems with supply at all but I only have one at a time. I only had to pump for 5 days and was getting about 2 oz every 2 hours on day 5. My hospital had me pump every 2 hours from 8am to 8pm and every 4 hours from 8pm to 8am. I hardly got anything in the night feedings though.

In order to have a good supply the most important thing is to drink a ton of water. I rarely went below 120 oz a day. I had a hard time with plain water so I dran****d tea. Try drinking as much as you can tolerate for a few days and I bet you see an increase. If for some reason you still don't produce enough, any breastmilk at all is better then straight formula. You can still breastfeed and after, offer a bottle if it is needed. Good luck.

I was never diagnosed with PCOS.  The tests they ran before i had RNY all came back negative.  They thought my infertility at that time was just due to my weight.  I guess i'll try reglan.  I've been drinking fluids but probably not enough, so will try to increase that too.  Thank you for the replies.  I'll just keep pumping away and let the girls get what they can for the time being.

I had my son before my RNY but still had problems producing breastmilk.  Malt beverages like ovaltine have been shown to increase supply.  I also found out about power-pumping from a lactation consultant.  It is time consuming but really made a difference.  You pump for 10 minutes stop for 10 minutes and repeat for 1 hour.  Also, you can't go for more then 6 hours without pumping and it's best to pump every 2 hours.  Pumping dictated everything I did for the first 3 months of my sons life, but he at least got some breast milk. alos, get a good pump.  I noticed that the Medela pump I rented from the hospital helped produce much more milk then the home one I had.
