Too bad you don't live around me in TX - we have a donut shop ON EVERY CORNER!! L.A. has Starbucks... we have donut shops. There is a reason everything is bigger in TX :)

that totally sucks.  I feel you on needing a donut sometimes.  Hey... I have been meaning to tell  you this for a while since you are such a foodie.  the company I work for just opened their new Market District store.  It has everything a foodie like you needs.  too bad you don't live here.. you'd be in heaven.  they have tons of gourmet specialty areas... including a crepe station, sushi, hydroponic garden in the store, microbrews, a rosti bar, and more than 400 imported cheeses.  there is a ton more, but I don't want you to run screaming from your house to PA to choke me. =-)  Here is the link.. perhaps you could make these suggestions to a local grocer near you..

IMO homemade donuts are just as good if not better than DD. My mom used to get canned biscuits and fry them then we'd ice and decorate them.
