OT - Fundraiser ideas

Heya gals!!

I need some help. My OBGYN that delivered both of my daughters has breast cancer. She has already indured a double mastectomy and is now going through chemo. She has almost lost all of her hair and is feeling completely alone. Not only is she having to deal with all of this, she is also facing financial hardship as she is the main bread winner for the family is on disability right now.

I want to to do something special for her - any ideas?

Also a friend and I would like to do some sort of fundraiser for her to give her a little bit of extra cash. Any ideas?

My mom, my friend, and I are going to the wig store to give them money and have them refund her credit card. That sucker was like $165!!!! That was after the chemo discount.

I love this woman dearly. She shared the most intimate & precious moments of my life with me delivering my children, and holding me when I was sobbing from losing my second pregnancy. I have clicked with her from day one and have considred her to be more of the older sister I never had.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks! Dawn

I am sooo sorry to hear this. My dad had prostate cancer and thankfully he beat it...so I understand how frustrating it can be. These things always attack the most beloved kind hearted people.

Ideas: I don't know your skills, talent, or time restrictions but I will try.

With the holidays coming up can you make any kind of like gift baskets. Fruit or cookies/treats. You know something friends can purchase and bring to someones house for the holidays. Or can you knit/crochet? What about scarfs and hats. They don't take very long to make and they are not expensive to make either. If you have a large social circle or even maybe if your OB is comfortable with the idea....maybe a walk to raise money. You and friends can agree to walk like 5 miles or however far and people can sponsor you depending how far you guys get.

I hope at least one of these ideas have inspired you. If you are unclear with any or need help doing any feel free to ask me (these are all things I've done in the past).

Thanks for the ideas Simone!!!!

I was thinking of the bake sale idea.... maybe setting up a table on a Saturday  morning with muffins and pastry type things at the huge gathering of soccer fields where I am :)

Our mutal friend is also her hair dresser so we were thinking of doing a fundraiser for a weekend where all the proceeds from the salon go to her. I sad heck - teach me how to shampoo hair - I am there!!!! :) We were also thinking of doing a walk - and getting her practice (which consists of 8 doctors and is totally HUGE) involved.

I can never figure out how cancer picks and chooses its victims. I hate it. F CANCER!

Those are great ideas too. I love the hairdresser one because everyone loves to be pampered. Tell me how it turns out.

I agree. F CANCER!

Good Luck and I'll keep your OB in my prayers.

I like the bake sale idea.  I have a breast cancer ribbon cookie cutter that I could send you if I can find it...I think it's in my can down stairs.  You could make a bunch of cookies and maybe even wrap them nicely with pink ribbons and sell them (or put a donation jar next to them) at the dr's office where she works at.

Alternatively, you could get one of those recipes online for homemade clay (there's one that smells like cinnamon...I can find the recipe for you if you can't find it, but it's 'google' able) and make breast cancer ribbons out of them, hang them on a nice pink ribbon and have them for sale/by donation or whatever.  People can hang them on their Christmas trees in rememberance of their own family members who are survivors of or victims of breast cancer.

I hope she beats...and it's great that she has friends like you and her hair dresser friend to help her do it.

Lots of Direct Sales Companys do special fundraisers as well if that's something your into. I know my company is HUGE on breast cancer awareness and detection. We have an entire department devoted to it and people hold breast cancer awareness fundraisers all the time.

You can do it a couple of ways, the fundraiser can be set up as an "official" breast cancer fundraiser but the money would be donated to the Susan G... foundation. Or, and I've done it this way many times, you can set up the fundraiser in someone's name (like your friend's) and they can get the check directly. I'm sure lots of other companies out there do this like mine does, so you can just pick what you like! The chairperson (you) usually receives special benefits as well for setting up the fundraiser.

Hope that helps!

I was involved with a walk that raised lots of money. It was a long walk to show those that donated that we were walking far to make a difference. Each walker got various people to sponsor them. We had a flier on the "main" person it was for with a picture so they knew who we were walking for. Some people donated money in memory of a loved one that battled cancer. So, we had people that had various pictures pinned to their shirt of different people to show who all they were walking in memory/honor of. It was a touching wonderful time.

We had a school donate their track to us for the event.

I am so sorry Dawn...I agree F Cancer.....a few other ideas that were not mentioned:

- Silent Auction: Have people donate tons of nice stuff (people will do that) and have a silent auction in conjunction with a spaghetti dinner like Lexa said....my mom did one recently in a small little town and raised over $7K for her friend with medical bills

- Pointsettias (sp) or Turkeys or Hams or Wreaths around the holidays...partner with a local store and get a discount and sell them...people will want this stuff around the holidays....

Much love and prayers to you and your friend!
