Another folic acid question

My husband and I are going to start TTC as soon as we can so obviously i'm going to continue taking pre-natals and extra folic acid during this time ..

my question is:

I get 1 mg with my pre-natal vit. and 1 mg extra. I see women here talking about getting up to 4 mg daily. As an RNY'er should I be taking more than the 2 mg I currently get?

Thanks!

Cathie,
I was put on 4 mg because of blood clotting issues (I dont remember if you have any clotting mutations or not), but if it is something you are concerned about ask your OB to have your folic acid levels checked, I am sure they would be willing to run the blood test for you if it would make you feel more comfortable...

good luck to ya hun!

Amanda,

Thanks for responding. I'll probably have updated labs done by my RNY doc. My OB is WLS stoopid and besides after the events of last week we're seriously considering changing to a new doc ...

I took 4mg folic acid through my pregnancies too, as prescribed by my high risk OB.  He has almost all his patients do that through 12 weeks.  I started it while TTC each time.  Something to definitely check with your doctor about.  I *think* it was related to diabetes and "advanced maternal age", but at this moment I can't for sure think of why he had me do it.  Good luck!
