does anyone have any opinion or info on this IUD... or if this is better or worse than the Mirena one? It sends copper into  your body instead of hormone.

Trying to get my stuff in line for after my baby boy is born...  thanks

Actually, I just had this IUD placed. After my first baby(who was premature 7 weeks 4 # 17 1/2" long), I was put on hormone birth control and ended up pregnant 4 weeks after giving birth!

After baby boy number two (8# 21" long) I managed to keep from getting pregnant by using condoms and taking advantage of pure luck when I didn't, but decided that luck wouldn't protect me forever; so I started taking another hormone pill call Yaz or as I call it "The devil's pill". The stuff did terrible things to me. I ended up having severe anxiety/panic attacks that landed me in the hospital with the administration of Ativan which knocked me out for days! I will NEVER take anything with hormones in it again.

Now, after the birth of my third baby boy 07/23/2009 10 pounds 11.6 ounces, 23" long, I decided that if the myth is true that they get bigger each time around, it was definatley time to find a good reliable source of birth control! I wanted the IUD because I want to lose my weight (depo shots and others tend to make you gain it) but I didn't want hormones. I didn't know Mirena had hormones and was disappointed at my consult to hear this. But the doctor offered a different option: The Copper IUD. The copper that is administered in your blood stream is so low, that unless you have a rare disorder that causes you to be unable to rid of it through natural bodily functions, you will be just fine. The copper IUD does not work to prevent pregnancy because of the release of the copper. Technically how the IUD works, (which I did not find out until after it was placed and am a little disappointed now) is by acting as a foreign object in your uterus so that if an egg is fertilized it cannot implant into the uterine lining and grow.

I know my friend had Mirena placed and she did not stop bleeding for three months and was sick constantly. I had the ParaGard placed on October 19th as my menses started lightly on the 18th and only had mild discomfort and bleeding for about 8 days. My menses usually only last for 3-5 days but 3 extra days isn't too bad! I was preparing myself for the worse. Actually having it put it in wasn't too bad either. My doctor recommended 600 mg of Ibuprofen or Motrin before going in. The only thing that bugged me during the first few days was the strings that hang down. Oh my goodness. The strings were irritating to the skin it came in contact with. It poked me, but as my menses subsided, and my cervix started moving up, the strings aren't even noticeable anymore! So far, so good.

ParaGard has a website with tons of information. That website may help you with any information I couldn't or didn't give (BTW: Sorry for the book) Hope this helps. Feel free to contact me with any other questions.

What I remember from my research is there were three main differences. The paraguard is for 10 years, the mirena for five.   The cooper IUD users reported heavier periods for a while and the mirena users reported lighter (or even stopped) periods.  The last difference was mirena has hormones the other one didn't (which you mentioned).
I chose the mirena and loved the first one I had.   After Hannah was born I chose mirena again and was miserable with this one.  They think it was trying to come out though and that's what was causing me to cramp and bleed so much.     Not for sure what I'll do after this baby is born between the time that hubby gets snipped.

From what I recall, the copper IUD can stay in longer but may cause heavier periods and more cramping. I'm on my 2nd mirena IUD, and I love it. I have a little bit of irregular periods for the first few months with it, then they disappear totally. No more cramps either!

Hi Dev!

Hope all is well.

How long after Rowan's birth did you get your Mirena? or how long does one need to wait post-birth?

Best,
Leila

I think it was 6 weeks aterwards. My OB said he likes to wait until the uterus feels pretty firm again, so it isn't so much a set amount of time.

I have the copper IUD and so far no problems.  I had it inserted after my 6wk pp.  My periods have been significantly heavier and bad cramping on the first and second day.  You won't be able to get these until your first pp check so I would ask the OBGYN plenty of questions and then you can decide.  I went with the copper IUD also because I am still bf my baby, no hormones.  With the Mirena it has hormones which I was told is not great for bf moms.

Good luck on whatever you decide.

Hi...

I am an "old schooler" that NEVER posts but wanted to give you the low down on my IUD.  Have had the paragaurd for 2 years...LOVE IT.  Anyway...my periods were heavier at first...now...they are not.  So, no weight gain, no hormones, no worries.

Good Luck!

I had the paragard placed and had VERY, VERY, VERY heavy menses every month for 6 months.  As in, the super tampons every hour, plus overnights included a super pad so I could sleep for more than an hour at a time.  This was for 6 days of a 28 day cycle.  It sucked on a massive scale.

They pulled it and did a D&C in Feb to make sure I didn't have any other underlying conditions causing the massive bleeding.  No, it was all the paragard.  I since had the Mirena placed.  And while I have 10-day menses, it's a spotting thing rather than a flow.  I've had it since.. April?  I don't mind except it's not enough for a tampon, but it's not constant enough for a pad so sometimes I get a surprise when I go to the bathroom, but that's not that horrible.

I was concerned about the hormones given that I have very severe issues with hormone-related headaches, but they did not seem to increase with the mirena (miracle, that).
