pain patches?

I will of course either call the OB or ask at my appt next week. But can we use those icy hot pain patches while pregnant? I will be 12 weeks on friday. My lower back has been killing me and I am trying to avoid taking any pain medications but had to take Tylenol today it was so bad (and the accompanying headache). OR can we use the icy hot that you just rub right on.

I seem to have a lot of time to notice the back pain at 2 am when I am laying in bed wide awake. I have been propping the body pillow up behind me and putting a regular pillow between my knees to try and support my spine. I spoke with the chiropractor and she gave me a few stretches to do also.

Thanks ladies!!

Liz,
This is a great question! I use those all the time when not pregnant. Be sure to post the results-

I also have a lot of back pain from na old car accident. I find that yoga helps too. There are some good pregnancy ones, and it's a great workout! Maybe that would help.

Good luck!

Liz,
I actually ask, and from what they told me is no.  You don't want to use anything that heats your body up (esp 1st & 2nd  tri)...Heating up your body can heat up the baby and slow growth.  She even told me no hot bath that turn my skin red....which is my weakness....but don't do it anymore due to the baby...I would still ask your OB and get his/her opinion, but that's what I was told.....Thanks, Stacey

All those times I was hospitalized with Jantzen, THEY gave me those patches for my back. Maybe it's just OK in the 3rd trimester? Or maybe my docs were crackheads. But I used them. They even gave me some to take home with me the one time.

So I would have said yes to this one. Guess you better check with your doc. I know I was told no heat on my sides or stomach. I do remember that.

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!

I will call today, I was more concerned with the meds passing into my body then the heat - the did tell me that I could use a heating pad set on medium.

Thanks Jo!

Now that I think about it and have already outed my WONDERFUL OB/GYN as a crackhead.....I do recall that the things they gave me didn't have meds on them. You "broke" them and then they heated up.

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!

I was advised that I could not use the Vick's humidifier stuff when I had a cold because it is cat. C because they haven't done enough research on it. So I would assume that the Icy/Hot stuff would be the same as Vick's. :-(
