Severe headaches....

Hello lovely ladies!!

I was just wondering if this is normal, or should I be concerned... I am 15 weeks pregnant and since last Friday have been suffering from a severe headache on and off. The headache seems to be constant, but I have spells where it is alot worse and it has affected my vision and made me nauseous. I also have lost my appetite somewhat, and am forcing myself to eat regularly. I am drinking plenty of fluids (water, juice, some milk), and don't seem to have any other symptoms other than tiredness and lack of energy.

Has anyone else experienced this, and should I be worried, or just see how things progress? I have taken some paracetamol to help with the pain, as my Doctor said this is safe to take, but it hasn't really helped :(

Any advice is much appreciated!
Many thanks in advance

Vicky

(For those about to read this -- paracetamol is tylenol in the states.)

Hate to be the bearer and all that, but women will typically experience their first "vascular event" when pregnant.  Yeah, sucks to be us.

Both of my pregnancies were hell on earth.  I won't go into details unless you REALLY want me to, but I ran the gamut of both prophalactics (sp) and pain meds, including pain meds.  YES, paracetamol is perfectly safe in pregnancy.  In fact, over here, we have several formulations of paracetamol with other ingredients to help with headaches that are considered safe by our OBs.

If they don't help, you may have your OB look into Fioricet (paracetamol/butabital/caffeine) for some relief.

There are some other options.. feel free to PM me if you need some more help.  I'd be happy to go over what I went through as options.

And yes, I had two very healthy kiddos, both postop.  As you can see in my sig, they are growing like weeds.

It is more than likely hormonal related...as Shari stated.  HOWEVER, headaches are not something to ignore during pregnancy...this is coming from the voice of experience.  I would definitely let my OB know and be sure to have your blood pressure checked...an easy way to do this is to stop by any fire station close to your home and have one of them take it for you.  They are great about doing tihs sort of thing.  If it is elevated, you definitely need to get in to see your doc ASAP, as it could be the start of preeclampsia or HELLP syndrome.  If your BP is okay, then it probably really is just hormonal...but it is better safe than sorry.  This is not really due to baby, but really is more for your health.

Take care, and keep us posted on how you are doing!

Vicky,
I was about 15 weeks when I also had headaches. As a rule I don't drink caffeine, pregnant or not, but my OB told me to drink some every day- it worked for me! It took a few days, but it stopped the headaches. Now if I get one, I drink a little. I usually use the Crystal Light Energy, which has caffeine (Hence the energy) but I'm not sure if you are already drinking caffeine every day or not, so it may not help. Just a thought.

Could just be hormonal too...but, how is your blood pressure??? Headaches, blurry vision and nausea could be signs of preeclampsia. I would definately follow up with your health care provider. They can monitor your blood pressure and also run blood tests. Good luck. Shari

Sorry Vicky!

You've gotten some great advice here.  I had awful migraines when PG with my daughter, and I tried all kinds of homeopathic methods before my OB and I found a course of meds that seemed to help alleviate the symptoms, but not prevent them.  I hope you can find some relief!  Oh, and my daughter was born 100% healthy and is a VERY active 4yo now.

Hugs,

Jo

Hey there, it seems like you are getting ALOT of great advice.

I am 15 wks 1 day pregger with my first and im 7 months post op.

This wasnt planned but I am taking it in stride, I have had FULL on preg symptoms and I just started with the headaches last week, going to bed and waking up with them, (I have one now). My research says its common, but I am going to have my BP and Blood Glucose today, I have taken Tylenol which helps for about an hour or 2. I go see my OB on Nov 4 so I hope i can offer a little more insight.

I am just adding heachaches to the many illnesses I have had since finding out I was preg on Sep 29th!!

Congrats and Good Luck
